Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, Playing Well by chinmusic on Thursday 23 August 2007 at 4:48 pm

Rookie shortstop Troy Tulowitzki is making a late run at the Rookie of the Year Award in the National League with a very strong second half.  He has played in 36 games this season after the All-Star Break and he is 45 for 145 (.310 avg, .910 OPS) with 22 runs scored, 8 homers and 29 RBIs.  His strong 2nd half has spiked his season numbers in a positive direction.  He has now played in 118 games this season and he is 135 for 460 (.293 avg, .828 OPS) with 72 runs scored, 17 homers and 67 RBIs.

The Colorado Rockies sign Mark Redman to a minor-league contract

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page by chinmusic on Thursday 23 August 2007 at 6:52 am

The Rockies have signed veteran lefty starting pitcher Mark Redman to a minor league contract.  This will be Redman’s 4th organization that he’s played for this season with the others being the Braves, Rangers and Blue Jays.  Redman was awful in the majors this season with the Braves as he was 0-4 with a 11.63 ERA and a 2.26 WHIP in six games (5 starts).  Redman has started 20 games in the minors this season and he is 4-8 with a 4.88 ERA and a 1.70 WHIP.  He has worked 110.2 innings in the bush leagues and he has allowed 137 hits, walked 51 batters and whiffed 67.  This was a good signing by the Rockies for depth reasons.

The Colorado Rockies designate Alberto Arias for assignment

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page by chinmusic on Wednesday 22 August 2007 at 8:33 am

The Rockies have designated 23-year old righty Alberto Arias for assignment to make room on the roster for Franklin Morales.  The Rockies hope they can slide Arias through waivers and keep him around.  He pitched in 6 games for the Rockies this season and he was 0-0 with a 4.91 ERA and a 1.77 WHIP.  Morales was outstanding in his first start with the Rockies as he worked 5.1 innings and he allowed 5 hits, 1 earned run, whiffed 4 batters and walked 0.

The Colorado Rockies place Aaron Cook on the DL

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, Injuries by chinmusic on Thursday 16 August 2007 at 7:17 pm

The Rockies have placed righty starter Aaron Cook on the 15-day disabled list with a strained rib-cage muscle.  This will hurt the Rockies as Cook has been one of their best starters this season.  He has started 25 games this season for the Rockies and he is 8-7 with a 4.12 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP.  He will be replaced in the rotation by Elmer Dessens.

The Colorado Rockies place Willy Taveras on the DL

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, Injuries, Playing Well by chinmusic on Thursday 16 August 2007 at 7:05 pm

The Rockies have placed center fielder Willy Taveras on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right quad muscle.  Taveras is having a good season for the Rockies as he has played in 91 games this season and he is 108 for 347 (.311 avg, .735 OPS) with 59 runs scored, 2 homers, 22 RBIs and 29 stolen bases.  Taveras will be replaced in CF by Ryan Spilboroghs who is also having an outstanding season.  He has played in 60 games this season and he is 52 for 157 (.331 avg, .863 OPS) with 25 runs scored, 10 homer, 43 RBIs and 4 stolen bases.

The Colorado Rockies acquire Ramon Ortiz from the Twins

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page by chinmusic on Thursday 16 August 2007 at 6:53 pm

The Rockies have acquired righty starting pitched Ramon Ortiz from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for minor league infielder Matt Macri.  Ortiz will move right into Jason Hirsh’s spot in the rotation on Saturday.   He pitched in 28 games (10 starts) for the Twins this season and he was 4-4 with a 5.14 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP.  In 91 innings for the Twins he allowed 112 hits, walked 15 batters and whiffed 44.  Getting Ortiz was a good move for the Rockies because the price was right.

The Colorado Rockies are likely to recall lefty starter Franklin Morales from AAA ball

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, The Minors by chinmusic on Wednesday 15 August 2007 at 9:24 am

If the Rockies can’t make a trade for a starting pitcher before Saturday they likely will recall 21-year old lefty Franklin Morales to start that game.  He has started 20 games this season between AA+AAA ball and he is 5-4 with a 3.51 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP.  In 112.2 innings this season he has allowed 97 hits, walked 58 batters and whiffed 93.  Morales has a blazing fastball but if he doesn’t improve his control he will likely have problems pitching half of his games as Coors Field.

The Colorado Rockies designate Tim Harikkala for assignment

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page by chinmusic on Monday 13 August 2007 at 10:28 am

The Rockies only let Harikkala start one game for them and decided that they had seen enough.  He pitched 3.1 innings and he allowed 9 hits, 3 earned runs, walked a batter and whiffed 2.  The Rockies are trying to trade for either Josh Towers or Steve Trachsel before they need another starting pitcher.

The Colorado Rockies place Jeff Baker on the DL

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, Injuries by chinmusic on Sunday 12 August 2007 at 9:37 am

The Rockies have placed reserve infielder Jeff Baker on the 15-day disabled list with a mild concussion that was caused by him getting hit in the face with a pitch.  Baker has been struggling this season as a reserve as he has played in 71 games this season and he is 27 for 124 (.218 avg, .636 OPS) with 13 runs scored, 3 homers and 10 RBIs.  The Rockies have called up top prospect Ian Stewart to replace Baker on the roster.

The Colorado Rockies sign Elmer Dessens

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, The Minors by chinmusic on Saturday 11 August 2007 at 9:26 am

The Rockies have signed veteran righty Elmer Dessens to a minor league contract.  They will send him to AAA and stretch him out as a starting pitcher with the idea of letting him start a handful of games in September for them.  He pitched in 12 games this season out of the bullpen for the Brewers and he was 1-1 with a 6.60 ERA and a 1.80 WHIP.  In 15 innings this season he has allowed 24 hits, walked 3 batters and whiffed 12.   Dessens has now pitched in 351 major league games and he has compiled a 47-60 record with 5 saves and a 4.44 ERA.
