Colorado Rockies 2, Philadelphia Phillies 1

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, The Playoffs by chinmusic on Sunday 7 October 2007 at 7:58 am

The Rockies finished off the Phillies last night in Coors Field but it wasn’t without a fight.  Rookie Ubaldo Jimenez pitched outstanding last night and it kept the Rockies in the game until the 8th inning when they took the lead for good.  Jimenez pitched 6.1 innings and he allowed 3 hits, 1 earned run, walked 4 batters and whiffed 5.  Brian Fuentes worked the 8th inning and he was the winning pitcher as he worked a scoreless inning, whiffing 2 batters.  Closer Manny Corpas finished off the Phillies season with a scoreless 9th inning to earn another save.

Kazuo Matsui had another outstanding game as he was 2 for 3 with a triple and an RBI.  Brad Hawpe (2 for 4) and Yorvit Torrealba (2 for 3, with a run scored) and they pitched in on the victory.  But it was Jeff Baker pinch hitting for Brian Fuentes in the 8th inning that got the big hit.  He knocked in Garrett Atkins with a single off of J.C. Romero to win the game.  The Rockies finished off the Phillies 3-0 in this series and they will now play the Diamondbacks who swept the Cubs.

Hey guys - Phillies fan here. Just wanted to say congrats to the Rockies, and give you guys the respect you deserve. Classy team, great pitching, and ridiculously great hitting. I went to games 1 and 2… and let me tell you, going through the heart of the Rockies line-up is scary. Everyone can hit. When they get good pitching, both starting and middle relief, to get to your closer, I mean… the Rockies have a real shot to go far. Anyway, Philly fans do respect the Rockies, and on 610 WIP (our sportstalk radio in Philadelphia) a common theme is that while the Phillies bats were silent, the Rockies did shut them down and win the series. Good luck to you guys going forward. Maybe let’s do this again next year, but of course, hopefully the Phils will get hot at the right time! -JP
