The Colorado Rockies have the same cast at catcher for the 2008 season

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Positional Previews for Season by chinmusic on Tuesday 26 February 2008 at 11:37 am

29-year old Yorvit Torrealba returns as the starting catcher for the Rockies after parlaying his great post season into a nice contract. He played in 113 games for the Rockies last season and he was 101 for 396 (.255 avg, .699 OPS) with 47 runs scored, 8 homers and 47 RBIs. He had issues throwing the ball as he only nailed 18% of the runners that attempted to steal on him last season but Rockies pitchers liked to throw to him as they had a 4.12 ERA with him behind the plate.

25-year old righty swinging Chris Iannetta will likely be the backup for the Rockies this season. He did not live up to all of the hype surrounding his rookie season in 2007. He played in 67 games last season for the Rockies and he was 43 for 197 (.218 avg, .680 OPS) with 22 runs scored, 4 homers and 27 RBIs. Iannetta threw out 20% of the runners that attempted to steal on him last season and Rockies pitchers had a 4.71 ERA with him behind the plate. The Rockies hope he lives up to his vast potential in 2008.

26-year old righty swinging Edwin Bellorin will battle Iannetta in spring trainging for the right to back up Torrealba. He only played in 3 games for the Rockies last season and he was 0 for 2. Bellorin played in 59 games in AAA last season and he was 72 for 221 (.326 avg, .898 OPS) with 38 runs scored, 9 homers and 45 RBIs. He will likely start the season in AAA unless one of the catchers ahead of him get injured.

31-year old switch hitting Mike Rose last played in the majors in 2006 with the Cardinals but he’s in camp to try to win a job. He has played in 27 games in his major league career and he is 11 for 54 (.204 avg, .542 OPS) with 3 runs scored, 1 homer and 2 RBIs.

PROJECTED GRADE FOR THE 2008 SEASON: C

The Colorado Rockies only make minor adjustments to the roster for 2008

The Rockies didn’t do much to improve themselves but they might not have had to based on last season. The biggest move the Rockies made was signing 2B Marcus Giles to a minor league contract. If he wins the starting job he could rebound from the poor season he had with the Padres last year. Infielder Matt Kata and veteran outfielder Scott Podsednik are both in camp on minor league contracts and they will have a chance to make the Rockies out of spring training but the odds are against them.

Kip Wells and Josh Towers will battle for the #5 starter job in spring trainging with Franklin Morales and Mark Redman but don’t expect any miracles. Luis Vizcaino will take over LaTroy Hawkins’ bullpen role last season and he should be a minor improvement. Veterans Micah Bowie and Victor Zambrano will have a shot to make the team out of spring training but they are long shots.

The Colorado Rockies sign four players to minor league contracts

The Rockies have signed Scott Podsednik, Matt Kata, Mike Rose and Victor Zambrano to minor league contracts. Podsednik is by far the best player of this bunch. The 31-year old lefty swinging Podsednik played in 62 games last season for the White Sox and he was 52 for 214 (.243 avg, .668 OPS) with 30 runs scored, 2 homers, 11 RBIs and 12 stolen bases. Podsednik has now played in 657 games in his major league career and he is 672 for 2,469 (.272 avg, .715 OPS) with 384 runs scored, 27 homers, 186 RBIs and 224 stolen bases. 29-year old switch-hitting infielder Matt Kata will have a chance to make the team as a reserve infielder. Kata played in 78 games last season for the Pirates and Rangers and he was 35 for 158 (.222 avg) with 12 runs scored, 2 homers and 6 RBIs. Kata has now played in 238 games in his major league career and he is 156 for 645 (.242 avg, .677 OPS) with 87 runs scored, 12 homers and 58 RBIs. 31-year old switch hitting catcher Mike Rose will probably start the season in AAA because he won’t be able to win a job on the Opening Day roster unless the Rockies suffer injuries. Rose last played in the majors in 2006 with the Cardinals. Rose has now played in 27 games in his major league career and he is 11 for 54 (.204 avg, .542 OPS) with 3 runs scored, 1 homer and 2 RBIs. 32-year old righty pitcher Victor Zambrano will likely compete for a starting job for the Rockies. He pitched in 13 games (4 starts) last season for the Orioles and Blue Jays and he was 0-3 with a 10.17 ERA and a 2.35 WHIP. He has now pitched in 187 games (100 starts) in his major league career and he is 45-44 with 3 saves, a 4.64 ERA and a 1.52 WHIP.
