The Colorado Rockies place Yorvit Torrealba on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Sunday 31 August 2008 at 11:26 pm

The Rockies have placed veteran catcher Yorvit Torrealba on the 15-day disabled list with a torn meniscus in his left knee. He played in 70 games for the Rockies this season and he was 58 for 236 (.246 avg, .687 OPS) with 19 runs scored, 6 homers and 31 RBIs. Chris Iannetta will take over as the starting catcher the rest of the season and he was outplaying Torrealba this season anyway. He has played in 80 games this season for the Rockies and he is 72 for 262 (.275 avg, .911 OPS) with 37 runs scored, 14 homers and 52 RBIs. The Rockies have recalled 36-year old switch hitting catcher Adam Melhuse to back up Iannetta the rest of the season. Melhuse played in 37 games in Rookie and AAA ball this season and he was 29 for 102 (.284 avg, .844 OPS) with 15 runs scored, 3 homers and 17 RBIs. Melhuse also has played in 8 games for the Rangers this season and he is 4 for 20 (.200 avg, .473 OPS) with 1 run scored and 1 RBI. Melhuse has been a solid backup catcher in his career so he should do a good job for the Rockies in September. Melhuse has now played in 307 games in his major league career and he is 171 for 729 (.235 avg, .681 OPS) with 74 runs scored, 24 homers and 97 RBIs.

The Colorado Rockies place Matt Herges on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Thursday 21 August 2008 at 5:28 pm

The Colorado Rockies have placed righty reliever Matt Herges on the 15-day disabled list with lower back stiffness. Herges has pitched in 51 games (0 starts) for the Rockies this season and he is 3-4 with a 5.09 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP. The Rockies have recalled righty reliever Ryan Speier to replace Herges in the bullpen. Speier has pitched in 30 games for the Rockies this season (all in relief) and he is 1-1 with a 4.66 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP. Speier is probably a better pitcher than Herges right now so Herges getting dinged up might wind up being a good thing for the Rockies’ bullpen.

Troy Tulowitzki is finally waking up for the Colorado Rockies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well by chinmusic on Saturday 16 August 2008 at 12:35 pm

Troy Tulowitzki has finally woke up and it’s a good thing because the Rockies need his bat to make a run at the Dodgers and Diamondbacks in the N.L. West. On June 30th, Tulowitzki was hitting a truly pathetic .161 with 12 runs scored, 2 homers and 14 RBIs. Since then though Tulowitzki’s bat has started to come to life. Since June 30th Tulowitzki is 34 for 102 (.333 avg) with 16 runs scored, 2 homers and 10 RBIs. It seems that his power from last season is still not there as he has played in 63 games this season for the Rockies and he is 56 for 239 (.234 avg, .658 OPS) with 28 runs scored, 4 homers and 24 RBIs. The Rockies need him to keep hitting if they want to make a move in the division.

The Colorado Rockies sign Oscar Villarreal to a minor league contract

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Thursday 14 August 2008 at 7:06 pm

The Rockies have signed 26-year old righty reliever Oscar Villarreal to a minor league contract. Villarreal pitched in 35 games (0 starts) earlier this season for the Astros and he was 1-3 with a 5.02 ERA and a 1.57 WHIP. This was a good signing for the Rockies who will likely recall him on September 1st when rosters can expand. Villarreal has now pitched in 258 games (5 starts) in his major league career and he is 24-15 with 1 save, a 3.86 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP.

The Colorado Rockies designate Kip Wells for assignment

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Sunday 10 August 2008 at 2:58 pm

The Rockies have designated righthanded pitcher Kip Wells for assignment. Wells pitched in 15 games (2 starts) for the Rockies this year and he was 1-2 with a 5.27 ERA and a 1.76 WHIP. The Rockies got tired of watching Wells and his inability to throw strikes as he walked 19 batters in only 27.1 innings pitched. They won’t miss him one bit based on how he pitched for them this season.

The Colorado Rockies claim Livan Hernandez off waivers from the Twins

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Wednesday 6 August 2008 at 6:19 pm

The Rockies have claimed 33-year old righty starting pitcher Livan Hernandez off waivers from the Twins. He has started 23 games for the Twins this season and he was 10-8 with a 5.48 ERA and a 1.63 WHIP. Hernandez gave up 199 hits of which 18 were homers in only 139.2 innings this season so it will be interesting to see how his slow stuff works in Colorado. Hernandez has now pitched in 374 games (373 starts) in his major league career and he was 144-136 with a 4.32 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP. The one thing that Hernandez will give the Rockies is a lot of innings which will help the bullpen. Whether or not they are good innings or not is another matter.
