Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Friday 24 April 2009 at 5:20 am

The Rockies have placed righty reliever Ryan Speier and lefty starting pitcher Franklin Morales on the D.L. Speier has a injured left hamstring and Morales has a strained shoulder. Speier has pitched in 5 games (0 starts) this season for the Rockies and he is 0-0 with a 4.76 ERA and a 1.59 WHIP. He has pitched in 90 games (0 starts) in his career with the Rockies and he is 7-3 with a 3.99 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP. Morales has started 2 games for the Rockies this season and he is 1-0 with a 3.38 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP. Morales has whiffed 9 batters and only walked 1 in 8 innings for the Rockies this season. The Rockies have recalled 26-year old righty reliever Matt Daley for his first taste of the majors. He has pitched in 5 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball this season and he is 0-0 with a 1.13 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP. He has whiffed a stunning 15 batters this season while only walking 1 in 8 innings.

The Colorado Rockies purchase the contract of pitcher Matt Belisle

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Friday 10 April 2009 at 10:23 pm

The Rockies have purchased the contract of 28-year old starter/reliever Matt Belisle and they have designated 25-year old righty reliever Juan Morillo to make room on the roster. Belisle pitched in 6 games (all starts) for the Reds last season and he was 1-4 with a 7.28 ERA and a 1.79 WHIP. He has now pitched in 132 games (43 starts) in his major league career and he is 16-22 with 1 save, a 5.06 ERA and a 1.49 WHIP. Belisle could start or relieve for the Rockies giving the pitching staff more options. Morillo pitched in 52 games (0 starts) last season for the Rockies and he was 1-0 with a 5.28 ERA and a 1.83 WHIP. Morillo whiffed 55 batters but he walked a stunning 56 in only 59.2 innings last season. He also pitched in 1 game for the Rockies last season working a scoreless inning allowing 1 hit.

The Colorado Rockies acquire Jason Hammel from the Rays

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Sunday 5 April 2009 at 8:03 pm

The Rockies have acquired 26-year old righty starting pitcher Jason Hammel in return for 21-year old righty Aneury Rodriguez. Hammel will likely join the rotation for the Rockies at the outset of the 2009 season. Hammel pitched in 40 games (5 starts) for the Rays last season and he was 4-4 with 2 saves, a 4.60 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP. He has now pitched in 73 games (28 starts) in his major league career and he is 7-15 with 2 saves, a 5.90 ERA and a 1.64 WHIP. He does have good stuff so the Rockies are banking on him improving in 2009. Aneury Rodriguez was the #16 prospect in the Rockies’ minor league system according to Baseball America. Rodriguez pitched in 27 games (all starts) in A-ball last year and he was 9-10 with a 3.74 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP.

The over/under for the Colorado Rockies in 2009 is 77.5 wins

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Vegas Baby by chinmusic on Sunday 5 April 2009 at 2:26 pm

With the loss of Matt Holliday and lefty starting pitcher Jeff Francis out for the season it’s hard to fathom the Rockies winning more than the 74 games they won last season. Despite the National League West being a relatively weak division it’s hard to see the Rockies winning more than 77 games. I would take the under with confidence.

Clint Hurdle has to be on the hot seat in 2009 for the Colorado Rockies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Positional Previews for Season by chinmusic on Sunday 5 April 2009 at 2:23 pm

Sure, Clint Hurdle led the Rockies to the N.L. Pennant in 2007 but that seems like a long time ago after last season. Hurdle led the Rockies to a 74-88 record (45.7%) and a third place finish in the N.L. West. He has now been the manager of the Rockies for 7 seasons compiling a 516-597 (46.4%) record with a average division finish of 3.7. The Rockies likely won’t tolerate another poor season under Hurdle’s direction.

Brad Hawpe will provide pop in RF for the Colorado Rockies in 2009

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Positional Previews for Season by chinmusic on Sunday 5 April 2009 at 2:20 pm

29-year old lefty swinging Brad Hawpe will be the starting RF again for the Rockies in 2009. He played in 138 games for the Rockies last year and he was 138 for 488 (.283 avg, .879 OPS) with 69 runs scored, 25 homers and 85 RBIs. Hawpe has potential to put up better numbers than that in 2009. He is not a good defensive player as he made 9 errors in 133 games in RF last year while showing poor range. Hawpe does have a strong arm as he had 9 assists from RF last year.

27-year old righty swinging Matt Murton will back up Hawpe in 2009. Murton played in 28 games for the A’s and Cubs last season and he was 13 for 70 (.186 avg, .448 OPS) with 3 runs scored and 8 RBIs. Murton has now played in 317 games in his major league career and he has a batting average of .288 with a .792 OPS. He is a average defensive player.

Ryan Spilboroghs gets his big chance in 2009 for the Colorado Rockies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Positional Previews for Season by chinmusic on Sunday 5 April 2009 at 2:15 pm

29-year old righty swinging Ryan Spilboroghs has waited a long time to be an everyday player but his time appears to be ready to take over in CF for the Rockies. Spilboroghs played in 89 games for the Rockies in 2008 and he was 73 for 233 (.313 avg, .875 OPS) with 38 runs scored, 6 homers, 36 RBIs and 7 stolen bases. He didn’t make any errors in 17 games in CF last season for the Rockies while showing poor range. Spilboroghs will also be the leadoff hitter for the Rockies and the expectation is that he will play well for them in 2009.

23-year old lefty swinging Carlos Gonzalez was one of the players the Rockies received for Matt Holliday. He played in 85 games for the A’s last year and he was 73 for 302 (.242 avg, .633 OPS) with 31 runs scored, 4 homers, 26 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. He only made 2 errors in 69 games in CF for the A’s last season while showing outstanding range. He has a really nice upside for the future.

23-year old switch hitting Dexter Fowler is the #1 rated prospect in the Rockies’ organization according to Baseball America. He played in 13 games for the Rockies last season and he was 4 for 26 (.154 avg, .339 OPS) with 3 runs scored. Fowler also played in 108 games in AA-ball last year and he was 141 for 421 (.335 avg, .946 OPS) with 92 runs scored, 9 homers, 64 RBIs and 20 stolen bases. He didn’t make any errors in 9 games in CF with the Rockies last season while showing poor range. Like Gonzalez, Fowler has a big time upside.

PROJECTED GRADE FOR THE 2009 SEASON: B

The kids will get a chance in LF for the Colorado Rockies in 2009

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Positional Previews for Season by chinmusic on Sunday 5 April 2009 at 2:09 pm

Either 26-year old lefty swinging Seth Smith or 24-year old lefty swinging Ian Stewart will get the chance to replace the departed Matt Holliday. Smith played in 67 games for the Rockies last season and he was 28 for 108 (.259 avg, .785 OPS) with 13 runs scored, 4 homers and 15 RBIs. Smith got some huge pinch hits during the Rockies’ run to the World Series in 2007 and it’s likely that Clint Hurdle has not forgotten that. Smith didn’t make any errors in 8 games in LF last season while showing outstanding range.

Ian Stewart is a 3B by trade but the Rockies want to get his bat into the lineup somewhere. He played in 81 games for the Rockies last year and he was 69 for 266 (.259 avg, .804 OPS) with 33 runs scored, 10 homers and 41 RBIs. It’s expected that Stewart would be about an average defensive LF.

33-year old lefty swinging Scott Podsednik offers the Rockies a lot of speed off the bench. He played in 93 games for the Rockies last year and he was 41 for 162 (.253 avg, .655 OPS) with 22 runs scored, 1 homer, 15 RBIs and 12 stolen bases. He didn’t make any errors in LF in 10 games there for the Rockies last season while showing average range.

27-year old Matt Murton could also get some P.T. in LF for the Rockies this season. He played in 17 games in LF for the Cubs and A’s last season without making an error and showing good range.
