The Rockies have acquired 32-year old lefty reliever Joe Beimel from the Nationals for 25-year old righty reliever Ryan Mattheus and 23-year old righty reliever/starter Robinson Fabian. Beimel will likely work late in games as a situational lefty. He pitched in 45 games (0 starts) for the Nationals this season and he was 1-5 with 1 save, a 3.40 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP. Beimel has now pitched in 435 games (23 starts) in his major league career and he is 22-28 with 4 saves, a 4.23 ERA and a 1.49 WHIP. Ryan Mattheus was the #19 rated prospect in the Rockies’ system heading into this season according to Baseball America. He has pitched in 19 games (0 starts) in A+AA+AAA ball this season and he is 1-3 with a 3.81 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP. Mattheus will likely get called up by the Nationals soon. Fabian however has a long road to hoe to get to the majors. He has pitched in 24 games (12 starts) in A-ball this season and he is 3-6 with a 6.24 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP. This was not much of a price to pay for Beimel so I like this move for the Rockies.
