36-year old lefty swinging 1B Todd Helton has had a really solid year for the Rockies. He has played in 147 games this season for the Rockies and he is 170 for 527 (.323 avg, .897 OPS) with 73 runs scored, 14 homers and 84 RBIs. Maybe his back issues of the past is why his homers are starting to turn into doubles as he has 37 of them this season. The Rockies will be depending on Helton to not only get the Rockies into the playoffs but to help them win when they get there.

34-year old righty reliever Rafael Betancourt has been nasty since coming over in a trade with the Cleveland Indians. He has pitched in 27 games out of the pen for the Rockies and he is 3-1 with 1 save, a 1.77 ERA and a 0.84 WHIP. He has only allowed 13 hits in 20 1/3 innings for the Rockies while whiffing 22 batters showing just how nasty his stuff has been. Betancourt will have a key role late in games down the stretch for the Rockies who are trying to sew up the Wild Card.

23-year old lefty Franklin Morales is doing a fine job filling in for the injured Huston Street as the Rockies’ closer. Morales has pitched in 32 games (2 starts) for the Rockies this season and he is 3-1 with 6 saves, a 2.75 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP. Morales has whiffed 36 batters while only allowing 25 hits which shows how nasty his stuff can be. But he needs to tighten his control up a bit as he has walked 18 batters already this season. Despite Morales pitching so well out of the bullpen his future still likely lies in the Rockies’ rotation.

The Colorado Rockies acquire Jose Contreras from the White Sox

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by chinmusic on Tuesday 1 September 2009 at 2:45 pm

The Rockies have acquired 37-year old righty starting pitcher Jose Contreras and the cash to pay him from the White Sox for 24-year old righty starting pitcher Brandon Hynick. Contreras started 21 games for the White Sox this season and he was 5-13 with a 5.42 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP. He has now pitched in 184 games (173 starts) in his major league career and he is 70-63 with a 4.66 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP. Contreras will be needed in the starting rotation until Aaron Cook’s shoulder feels better. When Cook is ready to go Contreras will likely move to the bullpen unless he has pitched lights out. Contreras didn’t come cheap as the Rockies traded their #22 rated prospect (Brandon Hynick) heading into this season according to Baseball America. The 24-year old righty has started 26 games in AAA for the Rockies this season and he was 10-9 with a 3.82 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP. I’m not so sure how this trade helps the Rockies as Contreras has been awful this season but he does tend to step up when the games get big.
