The Rockies have acquired 37-year old righty starting pitcher Jose Contreras and the cash to pay him from the White Sox for 24-year old righty starting pitcher Brandon Hynick. Contreras started 21 games for the White Sox this season and he was 5-13 with a 5.42 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP. He has now pitched in 184 games (173 starts) in his major league career and he is 70-63 with a 4.66 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP. Contreras will be needed in the starting rotation until Aaron Cook’s shoulder feels better. When Cook is ready to go Contreras will likely move to the bullpen unless he has pitched lights out. Contreras didn’t come cheap as the Rockies traded their #22 rated prospect (Brandon Hynick) heading into this season according to Baseball America. The 24-year old righty has started 26 games in AAA for the Rockies this season and he was 10-9 with a 3.82 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP. I’m not so sure how this trade helps the Rockies as Contreras has been awful this season but he does tend to step up when the games get big.
