The Rockies have re-signed 30-year old righty reliever Juan Rincon to a minor league deal. Rincon pitched in 26 games (0 starts) for the Rockies last season and he was 3-2 with a 7.52 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP. He has now pitched in 442 games (3 starts) in his 9 years in the majors and he is 35-29 with 3 saves, a 4.03 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP. Rincon will have to pitch well to make the Rockies’ bullpen out of spring training.

The Colorado Rockies let Garrett Atkins walk

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Monday 14 December 2009 at 6:07 pm

The Rockies decided not to tender a 2010 contract to 30-year old righty swinging 3B Garrett Atkins making him a free agent. Atkins had a rough year in 2009 which led to his time ending in Colorado. Atkins played in 126 games last season for the Rockies and he was 80 for 354 (.226 avg, .650 OPS) with 37 runs scored, 9 homers and 48 RBIs. Atkins played in 773 games in his 7 years with the Rockies and he was 805 for 2,788 (.289 avg, .811 OPS) with 394 runs scored, 98 homers, 479 RBIs and 8 stolen bases. With Ian Stewart stepping up last season it made the decision to let Atkins walk a lot easier.

The Rockies have to be happy to have Betancourt back as he will be a solid set-up man for Huston Street in 2010.

The Colorado Rockies release Matt Murton

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Monday 7 December 2009 at 4:18 pm

The Rockies have released 28-year old righty swinging outfielder Matt Murton. Murton played in 29 games for the Rockies last season and he was 13 for 52 (.250 avg, .707 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 1 homer and 6 RBIs. He has now played in 346 games in his five years in the majors and he is 272 for 952 (.286 avg, .788 OPS) with 134 runs scored, 29 homers, 112 RBIs and 10 stolen bases. The Rockies have a lot of depth in the outfield which made Murton expendable.

UPDATE: The real reason that Murton was released was so that he could pursue a career playing in Japan. I bet he will do well there.

Hawpe played in 145 games for the Rockies last season and he was 143 for 501 (.285 avg, .903 OPS) with 82 runs scored, 23 homers and 86 RBIs. Hawpe is one the trade block for the Rockies because of how much jack he makes but the Rockies should really think about keeping him as he is a solid middle of the order bat.

Huston Street finished tied for 25th in the voting for N.L. MVP

Blogged under Awards, Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Throwing Well by chinmusic on Thursday 3 December 2009 at 10:42 pm

26-year old righty closer Huston Street of the Colorado Rockies finished in a tie for 25th in the MVP Voting in the N.L. with Justin Upton and Ryan Zimmerman. Street pitched in 64 games (0 starts) for the Rockies this year and he was 4-1 with 35 saves, a 3.06 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP. He only allowed 43 hits in 61 2/3 innings last season for the Rockies while whiffing 70 batters showing that he has adapted well to both Coors Field and the National League. Street has now pitched in 311 games (0 starts) in his 5-year major league career and he is 25-13 with 129 saves, a 2.91 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP. The Rockies have finally found the lockdown type closer that they have been looking for in Street.

Blogged under Awards, Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well by chinmusic on Thursday 3 December 2009 at 10:38 pm

36-year old lefty swinging 1B Todd Helton finished 13th in the voting for the N.L. MVP Award. He played in 151 games for the Rockies last season and he was 177 for 544 (.325 avg, .904 OPS) with 79 runs scored, 15 homers and 86 RBIs. Helton has now played in 1,812 games in his 13 years with the Rockies and he is 2,134 for 6,506 (.328 avg, .994 OPS) with 1,222 runs scored, 325 homers, 1,202 RBIs and 36 stolen bases. The Rockies are glad that Helton appears to be over his back problems but he’s still unlikely to regain the power that once made him one of the most feared hitters in the N.L.

Troy Tulowitzki finishes 5th in the MVP voting in the N.L.

Blogged under Awards, Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well by chinmusic on Thursday 3 December 2009 at 10:33 pm

25-year old righty swinging shortstop Troy Tulowitzki finished fifth in the voting for the N.L. MVP Award. He played in 151 games for the Rockies last season and he was 161 for 543 (.297 avg, .930 OPS) with 101 runs scored, 32 homers, 92 RBIs and 20 stolen bases. Tulowitzki has now played 4 years for the Rockies in which he has played in 432 games. In those games, Tulowitzki is 460 for 1,625 (.283 avg, .831 OPS) with 268 runs scored, 65 homers, 243 RBIs and 31 stolen bases. As long as Tulowitzki stays healthy he will be a player that the Rockies will be able to build around as only Hanley Ramirez is a better shortstop than he is in the N.L.
