Christian Friedrich is on the fast track for the Colorado Rockies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by chinmusic on Thursday 13 May 2010 at 1:17 pm

22-year old lefty starting pitcher Christian Friedrich is the Rockies’ #2 rated prospect coming into this season according to Baseball America. He has started 3 games in AA-ball this season and he is 0-1 with a 2.81 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP. In his three years in the minors he has pitched in 36 games (all starts) in which he is 8-8 with a 2.94 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP. He has whiffed 240 batters while only walking 62 in 183 2/3 career innings in the minors showing that he has both outstanding command and stuff. The Rockies have rebuilt the minor league system with a lot of imposing arms (Friedrich being one of them) which could help them sustain a lot of prolonged success in the near future.

The Colorado Rockies release Tim Redding

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by chinmusic on Wednesday 12 May 2010 at 9:47 pm

The Rockies have released 32-year old right starting pitcher Tim Redding. Redding started 5 games in AAA-ball for the Rockies this season and he was 1-1 with a 4.32 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP. He was quickly snapped up by the Yankees on a minor league deal but the Rockies won’t miss Redding as they have a lot of younger pitchers in the system that they like much better than him.

The Colorado Rockies are getting solid production from some veteran lefties in the pen

The Rockies are getting solid pitching out of 33-year old lefty reliever Joe Beimel and 34-year old lefty reliever Randy Flores so far this season. Beimel has pitched in 13 games (0 starts) for the Rockies this season and he is 0-0 with a 0.77 ERA and a 0.94 WHIP. Beimel has only allowed 8 hits in 11 2/3 innings thus far for the Rockies. Randy Flores has pitched in 15 games (0 starts) for the Rockies this season and he is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a 0.63 WHIP. He has been a specialist as the Rockies don’t let him pitch against right hitters and it’s paying off so far as he has only given up 3 hits in 8 innings this season. The Rockies hope both of these guys keep up the good work.

The Colorado Rockies have a couple of starting pitchers putting up a lot of zeroes

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Throwing Well by chinmusic on Wednesday 12 May 2010 at 8:50 am

Ubaldo Jimenez and the recently called up Jhoulys Chacin are throwing seeds for the Rockies right now. Jimenez has already tossed a no-hitter this season and there is no reason to think he can’t throw another one this season based on how well he is pitching right now. Jimenez has started 7 games for the Rockies so far this season and he is 6-1 with a 0.93 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP. He has only given up 28 hits in 48 1/3 innings this season while whiffing 49 batters showing just how dominating he has been. Jhoulys Chacin is showing why Baseball America said he was the Rockies’ #4 rated prospect coming into this season. He has pitched in 3 games (2 starts) for the Rockies this season and he is 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a 0.78 WHIP. He has only allowed 7 hits in 15 1/3 innings while whiffing 16 batters so far this season. The Rockies are going to get on a good run soon with the starting pitching they have been getting.

The Colorado Rockies place Franklin Morales on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Tuesday 11 May 2010 at 5:28 pm

The Rockies have placed lefty reliever Franklin Morales on the 15-day disabled list with left shoulder weakness. Morales has pitched in 12 games (0 starts) for the Rockies this season and he is 0-3 with 3 saves, a 4.09 ERA and a 1.64 WHIP. Morales would have been replaced as the closer even if he wasn’t hurt because he was having a very hard time throwing strikes. Morales has walked 8 batters in only 11 innings for the Rockies and that’s way too many for a closer. 27-year old righty Manny Corpas will take over as the Rockies’ closer until Morales returns to action. Corpas has pitched in 14 games (0 starts) for the Rockies this season and he is 1-2 with a 3.18 ERA and a 0.97 WHIP. He has only given up 13 hits in 22 2/3 innings this season showing that his stuff is sharp right now. I think he will do a good job until Huston Street is ready to come off the D.L.

The Colorado Rockies DFA Juan Rincon

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Sunday 2 May 2010 at 12:50 pm

The Rockies have designated 31-year old righty reliever Juan Rincon. Rincon only pitched in 1 game for the Rockies this season and he was 0-0 with a 9.00 ERA and a 3.00 WHIP. He pitched in 27 games (0 starts) in his two years with the Rockies and he is 3-2 with a 7.57 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP. The Rockies won’t miss Rincon one bit as he was pitching batting practice his whole time in Denver the last two years.

The Colorado Rockies have a couple of relievers in AAA who are dominating right now

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by chinmusic on Saturday 1 May 2010 at 2:16 pm

25-year old lefty Matt Reynolds and 26-year old righty Andrew Johnston have both been outstanding so far this season in AAA for the Rockies. Reynolds was the Rockies’ #25 rated prospect heading into this season according to Baseball America. He has pitched in 9 games out of the pen this season and he is 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a 0.60 WHIP. Reynolds has only allowed 7 hits in 11 2/3 innings while whiffing 15 batters showing just how dominating he has been. He also has not walked a batter yet this season. Johnston has pitched in 11 games out of the pen in AAA this year and he is 2-1 with a 0.75 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP. Look for Reynolds and Johnston to make their way to Denver if they keep pitching well and the Rockies have a need in the pen.
