Jonathan Herrera is playing well for the Colorado Rockies right now

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Playing Well by chinmusic on Monday 28 June 2010 at 7:27 pm

25-year old switch hitting Jonathan Herrera has taken well to his new job as the Rockies’ starting 2B. He has played in 19 games this season for the Rockies and he is 18 of 59 (.305 avg, .633 OPS) with 7 runs scored and 2 RBIs. Herrera goes up to the plate hacking as he has only walked 2 times this season. The Rockies won’t care much about Herrera’s plate discipline as long as he keeps hitting the ball well and playing good defense. The Rockies are likely still looking to trade for a 2B or SS despite Herrera’s recent success.

The Colorado Rockies activate Huston Street from the D.L.

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by chinmusic on Tuesday 22 June 2010 at 5:28 pm

The Rockies have activated 26-year old righty reliever Huston Street from the 15-day disabled list. He pitched in 9 games (2 starts) in AA+AAA-ball this year on a rehab assignment and he was 1-1 with a 8.64 ERA and a 1.80 WHIP. The Rockies will likely bring Street along slowly letting him work his way back to being the closer. Street pitched in 64 games (0 starts) for the Rockies in his first year with them in 2009 and he was 4-1 with 35 saves, a 3.06 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP. The Rockies have DFA’d 31-year old righty reliever Juan Rincon to make room on the roster for Street. Rincon pitched in 2 games (0 starts) for the Rockies this year and he was 0-0 with a 4.50 ERA and a 2.50 WHIP. He pitched in 28 games (0 starts) in his two years with the Rockies and he was 3-2 with a 7.31 ERA and a 1.52 WHIP.

Seth Smith is swinging a good stick for the Colorado Rockies

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Playing Well by chinmusic on Tuesday 22 June 2010 at 11:59 am

27-year old lefty swinging Seth Smith is probably the best outfielder in baseball without a starting job. He has played in 59 games for the Rockies this season and he is 44 of 162 (.272 avg, .860 OPS) with 29 runs scored, 10 homers and 31 RBIs. Smith has now played in 266 games in his major league career and he is 175 of 613 (.285 avg, .871 OPS) with 107 runs scored, 29 homers and 101 RBIs. Seth Smith has been a big time player for the Rockies despite not playing every day and that will likely continue at least the rest of this year do to the glut of outfielders on the Rockies’ roster.

The Colorado Rockies lose Troy Tulowitzki

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injuries by chinmusic on Saturday 19 June 2010 at 8:46 pm

The Rockies have lost 25-year old righty swinging shortstop Troy Tulowitzki for the next 6-8 weeks due to a broken left wrist. Tulowitzki has played in 62 games for the Rockies this season and he is 72 of 235 (.306 avg, .877 OPS) with 47 runs scored, 9 homers, 34 RBIs and 7 stolen bases. Clint Barmes will slide over from 2B to replace Tulo at SS. Barmes has played in 59 games for the Rockies this year and he is 43 of 192 (.224 avg, .650 OPS) with 15 runs scored, 4 homers and 31 RBIs. Barmes is a good defensive SS but the Rockies will miss Tulowitzki’s bat as Jonathan Herrera will be taking over at 2B for now. Herrera has played in 11 games for the Rockies so far this season and he is 3 for 23 (.130 avg, .297 OPS) with 2 runs scored. The Rockies might need to look outside the organization for a 2B or SS if Herrera isn’t up to the challenge.

The Colorado Rockies place Matt Daley on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injuries by chinmusic on Wednesday 16 June 2010 at 4:50 pm

The Rockies have placed 28-year old righty reliever Matt Daley on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation. Daley has pitched in 26 games (0 starts) for the Rockies this season and he is 0-1 with a 3.74 ERA and a 1.52 WHIP. The Rockies have called up 31-year old righty reliever Juan Rincon to replace Daley in the pen. He has pitched in 24 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball so far this season and he is 2-2 with 7 saves, a 7.25 ERA and a 1.93 WHIP. He has also pitched in 1 game with the Rockies this year going 0-0 with a 9.00 ERA and a 3.00 WHIP.

What is wrong with Todd Helton of the Colorado Rockies?

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,In Need of a Slumpbuster by chinmusic on Tuesday 15 June 2010 at 8:38 pm

36-year old lefty swinging starting 1B Todd Helton is off to a very slow start this year. He has played in 55 games for the Rockies this year and he is 49 of 192 (.255 avg, .684 OPS) with 22 runs scored, 1 homer and 11 RBIs. Helton has played 14 years for the Rockies appearing in 1,867 games in which he is 2,183 of 6,698 (.326 avg, .985 OPS) with 1,244 runs scored, 326 homers and 1,213 RBIs. I blame the Humidor and Helton’s age as the reasons he’s not hitting like he used to. The Rockies can’t make the playoffs with Helton hitting like he is right now so they need him to wake up…..and soon!

Rafael Betancourt has been pretty bad for the Colorado Rockies this year

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Pitching BP by chinmusic on Monday 14 June 2010 at 1:07 pm

35-year old righty reliever Rafael Betancourt was awesome last season for the Rockies pitching in 32 games (0 starts) in which he was 3-1 with 1 save, a 1.78 ERA and a 0.87 WHIP. But Betancourt has been nowhere near as good this season for the Rockies. He has pitched in 25 games (0 starts) for the Rockies this year and he is 1-1 with a 5.48 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP. Betancourt has only walked 3 batters this season while whiffing 27 batters in only 21 1/3 innings so his stuff has been there. But he’s not missing enough bats as he has given up 28 hits already this season. I think Betancourt will get his act together soon because his major league track record shows it will.

Dante Bichette took advantage of the live ball era of Colorado Rockies’ baseball

Blogged under Blast from the Past,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by chinmusic on Monday 7 June 2010 at 9:49 pm

Righty swinging outfielder Dante Bichette benefitted of playing for the Rockies before they started putting game balls in the Humidor. He was a 4-time All-Star with the Rockies and he also led the league in hits twice and RBIs once. Bichette played in 1,018 games in his 7 years with the Rockies and he was 1,278 of 4,050 (.316 avg, .892 OPS) with 665 runs scored, 201 homers, 826 RBIs and 105 stolen bases. Bichette is #4 all-time with 1,018 games for the Rockies. He is also #5 in batting average (.316), #6 in OPS (.892), #3 in runs scored (665), #4 in homers (201), #3 in RBIs (826), #3 in stolen bases (105), #3 in doubles (270), #10 in triples (18) and he is #9 in walks (226) in Rockies’ history. Bichette was definitely aided by playing half of his games at Coors Field but he was still a really good baseball player regardless.

Jay Payton is swinging the bat well in AAA for the Colorado Rockies

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,The Minors by chinmusic on Thursday 3 June 2010 at 5:09 pm

37-year old righty swinging outfielder Jay Payton is playing well in AAA for the Rockies this year. He has played in 47 games this year in which he is 51 of 162 (.315 avg, .819 OPS) with 19 runs scored, 2 homers, 26 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. Payton last played in the majors in 2008 with the Orioles. He has now played in 1,239 games in his major league career and he is 1,145 of 4,119 (.278 avg, .747 OPS) with 558 runs scored, 119 homers, 521 RBIs and 46 stolen bases. The Rockies are deep in the outfield but if Payton keeps hitting well he will likely get a call at some point this year to return to the show.
