The Colorado Rockies DFA Brad Eldred

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by chinmusic on Wednesday 28 July 2010 at 11:02 am

The Rockies have designated 29-year old righty swinging 1B Brad Eldred for assignment. Eldred played in 11 games for the Rockies this year and he was 6 of 24 (.250 avg, .750 OPS) with 4 runs scored, 1 homer and 3 RBIs. It wasn’t all good for Eldred though as he whiffed 10 times for the Rockies. The Rockies need Eldred’s roster spot to activate starting SS Troy Tulowitzki off the D.L. Tulowitzki has played in 63 games for the Rockies this year and he is 72 of 239 (.301 avg, .863 OPS) with 47 runs scored, 9 homers, 34 RBIs and 7 stolen bases. The Rockies hope Tulowitzki gives them a jolt to get them back into the playoff race.

The Colorado Rockies send Jhoulys Chacin back to the minors

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Throwing Well by chinmusic on Monday 26 July 2010 at 2:26 pm

The Rockies have sent 22-year old righty starter/reliever Jhoulys Chacin back to the minors so that he can go back to starting again. He has had some issues pitching out of the pen for the Rockies this year. Chacin has pitched in 19 games (12 starts) for the Rockies this year and he is 5-8 with a 4.04 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP. He only gave up 70 hits in 82 1/3 innings for the Rockies this year and he has whiffed 89 batters showing what kind of stuff he has. Chacin still has to tighten up his control a bit as he has walked 38 batters this year. When he fixes his control then the Rockies will have a #1 or #2 type starter in the near future.

If I were running the Colorado Rockies here’s a couple moves I would make

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,If I Were GM,Trade Rumors by chinmusic on Tuesday 20 July 2010 at 9:40 am

The Rockies need to make a couple moves to deal with the rest of the N.L. West. The Rockies just aren’t getting anything at all out of Todd Helton this season. With that in mind I would call up the Blue Jays and see if they were willing to pay Lyle Overbay while he would be playing for the Rockies. If the answer is yes I would send them 26-year old lefty starting pitcher Greg Smith. I would then call up the Royals and offer them 25-year old switch hitting IF/OF Eric Young straight up for infielder Mike Aviles. Aviles would start at 2B until Troy Tulowitzki came off the D.L. Adding Overbay and Aviles would really enhance the chances of the Rockies in 2010.

Matt Miller is inching closer to the majors for the Colorado Rockies

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,The Minors by chinmusic on Sunday 18 July 2010 at 9:31 pm

27-year old righty swinging outfielder Matt Miller is having a solid season in AAA. He has played in 86 games in AAA-ball this year and he is 114 of 336 (.339 avg, .886 OPS) with 69 runs scored, 8 homers and 56 RBIs. Miller could be a trade chip later this month or he could get called up by the Rockies if they move an outfielder in a trade before the deadline on July 31st. Either way it appears that Miller is working his way closer to the major leagues.

The Colorado Rockies finished the first half strong

The Rockies are 49-39 on the season which has them tied for second place in the N.L. West with the Dodgers, 2 games behind the Padres. The Rockies have had some surprises and disappointments and here’s a closer look at them:

Pleasant Surprises: 31-year old righty swinging catcher Miguel Olivo was supposed to share P.T. with Chris Iannetta behind the plate but he played so well that the Rockies sent Iannetta to AAA. Olivo has played in 63 games for the Rockies this year and he is 74 of 228 (.325 avg, .925 OPS) with 42 runs scored, 11 homers, 42 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. 25-year old switch hitting 2B Jonathan Herrera has really stepped up when getting the chance to play due to Troy Tulowitzki’s injury. Herrera has played in 32 games for the Rockies this year and he is 36 of 113 (.319 avg, .701 OPS) with 14 runs scored and 10 RBIs. 30-year old righty reliever Matt Belisle is pitching the best baseball of his major league career for the Rockies in 2010. Belisle has pitched in 42 games (0 starts) for the Rockies this year and he is 4-4 with 1 save, a 2.63 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP. 33-year old lefty reliever Joe Beimel has also been outstanding out of the pen for the Rockies this year. He has pitched in 39 games (0 starts) for the Rockies this year and he is 1-0 with a 2.28 ERA and a 0.94 WHIP.

Disappointments: 36-year old lefty swinging 1B Todd Helton appears to be getting near to the end of the line. He has played in 69 games for the Rockies this year and he is 61 of 248 (.246 avg, .646 OPS) with 29 runs scored, 2 homers and 16 RBIs. 24-year old switch hitting Dexter Fowler started the season as the starting CF for the Rockies but he got sent to the minors after a slow start. Fowler has played in 59 games for the Rockies this year and he is 44 of 189 (.233 avg, .734 OPS) with 32 runs scored, 2 homers, 10 RBIs and 8 stolen bases. 27-year old righty swinging Chris Iannetta is back in the majors but he has been a big disappointment for the Rockies this year. Iannetta has played in 26 games for the Rockies this year and he is 18 of 87 (.207 avg, .772 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 6 homers and 13 RBIs. 24-year old lefty reliever Franklin Morales has been awful this year for the Rockies. He has pitched in 23 games (0 starts) for the Rockies this year and he is 0-3 with 3 saves, a 6.75 ERA and a 1.88 WHIP. Morales has walked a stunningly bad 18 batters in only 21 1/3 innings this season for the Rockies.

Larry Walker is all over the record books for the Colorado Rockies

Blogged under Blast from the Past,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by chinmusic on Wednesday 7 July 2010 at 7:20 pm

I remember early on in the Rockies’ existence wondering what a good baseball player could do playing in Colorado after watching guys like Vinny Castilla and Dante Bichette turning into stars in the light air. I got my answer when Larry Walker came to Denver to play with the Rockies. Walker played 10 seasons with the Rockies appearing in 1,170 games in which he was 1,361 of 4,076 (.334 avg, 1.044 OPS) with 892 runs scored, 258 homers, 848 RBIs and 126 stolen bases. In 1997 Walker won the N.L. MVP Award by putting up eye popping numbers. In that year, Walker played in 153 games in which he was 208 of 568 (.366 avg, 1.172 OPS) with 143 runs scored, 49 homers, 130 RBIs and 33 stolen bases! In his 10 years with the Rockies, Walker was a All-Star 5 times, he won 5 Gold Gloves and he was a Silver Slugger twice. Walker is #2 all-time in games played (1,170), runs scored (892), hits (1,361), doubles (297), triples (44), homers (258), RBIs (848) and walks (584). It’s amazing to me that Walker is #2 all-time in 8 different categories in Rockies’ history especially with as much offense that has happened at Coors Field.

The Colorado Rockies place Todd Helton on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injuries by chinmusic on Wednesday 7 July 2010 at 7:13 pm

The Rockies have placed starting 1B Todd Helton on the 15-day disabled list with back soreness. Helton has not looked like himself at the plate this season. He has played in 69 games for the Rockies this season and he is 61 of 248 (.246 avg, .646 OPS) with 29 runs scored, 2 homers and 16 RBIs. The Rockies have recalled 29-year old righty swinging 1B Brad Eldred to replace Helton on the roster. Eldred has played in 71 games in AAA-ball this season and he was 71 of 266 (.267 avg, .898 OPS) with 47 runs scored, 22 homers and 64 RBIs. Eldred has played in 74 games in his major league career and he is 47 of 236 (.199 avg, .670 OPS) with 26 runs scored, 14 homers and 30 RBIs. But he has some holes in his swing as he has whiffed 93 times in the majors. Eldred and Jason Giambi could platoon at 1B while Helton is out of action.

The Colorado Rockies could be looking for a middle infielder this month

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,If I Were GM,Trade Rumors by chinmusic on Tuesday 6 July 2010 at 6:04 pm

The Colorado Rockies might be looking for some middle infield help this month. With 2B Jonathan Herrera and Clint Barmes playing so well they might just be looking for a backup who can play both positions. John McDonald, Julio Lugo, Willie Bloomquist, Adam Kennedy, Craig Counsell, Jeff Keppinger and Ronny Cedeno each make sense. The Rockies are sitting at 44-38 which has them five games behind the Padres in the N.L. West. If Herrera starts to slump then guys like Mike Aviles, Mark Ellis, Christian Guzman and Mike Fontenot could come into play. The Rockies don’t need any major changes to compete for a playoff spot this year.

The Colorado Rockies have two All-Stars

Blogged under Awards,Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Playing Well,Throwing Well by chinmusic on Monday 5 July 2010 at 12:33 pm

The Rockies have two All-Stars. 25-year old shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and 26-year old righty starting pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez are the two guys. Tulowitzki has played in 62 games this season for the Rockies and he is 72 of 235 (.306 avg, .877 OPS) with 47 runs scored, 9 homers, 34 RBIs and 7 RBIs. He will have to miss his first All-Star Game appearance due to injury. Ubaldo Jimenez deserves to be the N.L. starting pitcher in my opinion despite his recent performance. Jimenez has pitched in 17 games (all starts) for the Rockies this year and he is 14-1 with a 2.27 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP. He has only given up 84 hits in 119 innings pitched so far this season as he has been downright nasty. This will be Jimenez’ first appearance in the All-Star Game.

Tyler Matzek is off to a very quick start in the minors for the Colorado Rockies

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,The Minors by chinmusic on Friday 2 July 2010 at 11:00 am

19-year old lefty starting pitcher Tyler Matzek was a first round pick of the Rockies in 2009. He was also considered the Rockies’ #1 prospect heading into this season according to Baseball America. He is really off to a outstanding start in the minors for the Rockies. He has started 7 games in A-ball this season and he is 1-0 with a 2.31 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP. He has only given up 22 hits in 35 innings so far this season while whiffing 39 batters showing what kind of stuff he has. But he has walked 24 batters as his control will need to tighten up quite a bit before he eventually gets to Denver.
