The Colorado Rockies sign Eric Stults

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Monday 29 November 2010 at 8:44 pm

The Rockies have signed 30-year old lefty starter/reliever Eric Stults to a minor league deal. Stults didn’t pitch last season. He last pitched in 2009 with the Dodgers. Stults has pitched in 35 games (24 starts) in parts of four years in the majors and he is 8-10 with a 4.84 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP. Stults is someone the Rockies know well from his days with the Dodgers and he will get a chance to make the pitching staff next spring.

The Colorado Rockies sign Matt Pagnozzi

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Monday 29 November 2010 at 8:41 pm

The Rockies have signed 28-year old righty swinging catcher Matt Pagnozzi to a minor league deal. Pagnozzi played in 15 games for the Cardinals last season and he was 14 of 39 (.359 avg, .892 OPS) with 4 runs scored, 1 homer and 10 RBIs. He has now played in 21 games in parts of two years in the majors and he is 14 of 42 (.333 avg, .844 OPS) with 5 runs scored, 1 homer and 10 RBIs. His major league performance so far is likely a mirage as he is a career .214 hitter (.586 OPS) in his 8 years in the minors covering 571 games.

Ubaldo Jimenez finishes 3rd in the N.L. Cy Young Award voting

Blogged under Awards, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Tuesday 23 November 2010 at 4:25 pm

26-year old righty starting pitcher Udaldo Jimenez finished 3rd in the voting for the N.L. Cy Young Award. Jimenez started 33 games for the Rockies last season and he was 19-8 with a 2.88 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP. He has now pitched in 117 games (116 starts) in his first 5 years with the Rockies and he is 50-36 with a 3.52 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP. I wouldn’t be shocked at all to see him win a Cy Young or two in his career as he has outstanding stuff.

UPDATE: (12/1/2010) - Ubaldo Jimenez has also finished 23rd in the voting for the N.L. MVP Award.

The Colorado Rockies deal Clint Barmes to the Astros

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Thursday 18 November 2010 at 3:22 pm

The Rockies have dealt 31-year old righty swinging 2B/SS Clint Barmes to the Astros for 27-year old righty starter/reliever Felipe Paulino. Barmes played in 133 games for the Rockies last season and he was 91 of 387 (.235 avg, .656 OPS) with 43 runs scored, 8 homers, 50 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. In 8 years with the Rockies, Barmes played in 665 games in which he was 582 of 2,291 (.254 avg, .704 OPS) with 292 runs scored, 61 homers, 285 RBIs and 39 stolen bases. Paulino pitched in 19 games (14 starts) for the Astros last season and he was 1-9 with a 5.11 ERA and a 1.54 WHIP. In parts of three years with the Astros, Paulino pitched in 47 games (34 starts) in which he was 6-21 with a 5.83 ERA and a 1.60 WHIP. Despite Paulino’s numbers he does have good stuff. He has a hard time with his control and dealing with lefty swinging batters so he might be better served pitching in relief. The Rockies will now be on the hunt for a 2B to replace Barmes in 2011.

The Colorado Rockies have released Manny Corpas

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Tuesday 16 November 2010 at 2:52 pm

The Rockies have released 27-year old righty reliever Manny Corpas. Corpas pitched in 56 games (0 starts) for the Rockies last season and he was 3-5 with 10 saves, a 4.62 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP. He pitched in 280 games (0 starts) in parts of five years for the Rockies and he was 12-16 with 34 saves, a 3.93 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP. Corpas had Tommy John Surgery last September so his release comes a no surprise as he likely won pitch at all in 2011.

The Colorado Rockies deal 2B/OF Anthony Jackson to the Dodgers

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Tuesday 16 November 2010 at 2:03 pm

The Rockies have traded 26-year old switch hitting 2B/OF Anthony Jackson to the Dodgers to complete the Octavio Dotel deal from last year. Jackson played in 122 games in AA-ball for the Rockies last season and he was 109 of 434 (.251 avg, .676 OPS) with 67 runs scored, 2 homers, 40 RBIs and 33 stolen bases. He played five years in the minors for the Rockies playing in 528 games in which he was 505 of 2,002 (.252 avg, .670 OPS) with 315 runs scored, 14 homers, 176 RBIs and 151 stolen bases. Jackson wasn’t a top prospect for the Rockies so I have no problem with this deal.

The Colorado Rockies decline Octavio Dotel’s option for 2011

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Friday 5 November 2010 at 9:01 am

The Rockies have declined 36-year old righty reliever Octavio Dotel’s $4.5 million dollar option for the 2011 season. Dotel pitched in 8 games (0 starts) for the Rockies last season and he was 0-1 with a 5.06 ERA and a 1.88 WHIP. He has now pitched in 630 games (34 starts) in his 12 years in the majors and he is 49-43 with 105 saves, a 3.75 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP. The Rockies will be looking for relief help in 2011 but they likely won’t be calling Dotel.

The Colorado Rockies deal Miguel Olivo to the Blue Jays

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Friday 5 November 2010 at 8:58 am

The Rockies have dealt 32-year old righty swinging catcher Miguel Olivo to the Blue Jays for either a player to be named later or cash. Olivo played in 112 games for the Rockies last season and he was 106 of 394 (.269 avg, .765 OPS) with 55 runs scored, 14 homers, 58 RBIs and 7 stolen bases. Olivo has played in 866 games in his first 9 years in the majors and he is 708 of 2,876 (.246 avg, .710 OPS) with 345 runs scored, 110 homers, 388 RBIs and 44 stolen bases. The Rockies have already saved $500K in this deal because they didn’t have to buy out Olivo’s option. Look for the Rockies to be on the hunt for a veteran catcher to share time with Chris Iannetta behind the plate in 2011.

The Colorado Rockies have 8 free agents heading into this winter

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, If I Were GM by chinmusic on Tuesday 2 November 2010 at 5:05 pm

The Rockies have 8 free agents heading into this winter so they will have some hard decisions to make. Here is how I see those decisions going down:

Miguel Olivo: 32-year old righty swinging catcher Miguel Olivo played in 112 games for the Rockies last season and he was 106 of 394 (.269 avg, .765 OPS) with 55 runs scored, 14 homers, 58 RBIs and 7 stolen bases. The Rockies hold a $2.7 million dollar option on Olivo with a $500K buyout. VERDICT: The Rockies have actually been getting trade offers for Olivo. I have a feeling that they might pick up his option and then deal him. They have been reported to have a big time interest in switch hitting Victor Martinez.

Jason Giambi: 39-year old lefty swinging 1B Jason Giambi played in 87 games for the Rockies last season and he was 43 of 176 (.244 avg, .776 OPS) with 17 runs scored, 6 homers, 35 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. VERDICT: I see the Rockies letting Giambi go as they are on the hunt for a righty swinging 1B to share time with Todd Helton next year.

Melvin Mora: 38-year old righty swinging 3B Melvin Mora played in 113 games for the Rockies last season and he was 90 for 316 (.285 avg, .779 OPS) with 39 runs scored, 7 homers, 45 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. VERDICT: If the Rockies can get Mora back on a decent deal I think they will make it happen.

Jay Payton: 37-year old righty swinging outfielder Jay Payton played in 20 games for the Rockies last season and he was 12 of 35 (.343 avg, .875 OPS) with 3 runs scored, 1 RBI and 1 stolen base. VERDICT: The Rockies might invite Payton to spring training but I think that’s the best they can do for him.

Jorge de la Rosa: 29-year old lefty starting pitcher Jorge de la Rosa pitched in 20 games (all starts) for the Rockies last year and he was 8-7 with a 4.22 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP. VERDICT: The Rockies want de la Rosa back but they have to be careful not overpay for him.

Jeff Francis: 29-year old lefty starting pitcher Jeff Francis pitched in 20 games (19 starts) for the Rockies last season and he was 4-6 with a 5.00 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP. VERDICT: The Rockies turned down Francis’ club option worth $7 million big ones. They would likely want to bring him back on a deal with a small base salary with a lot of incentives.

Joe Beimel: 33-year old lefty reliever Joe Beimel pitched in 71 games (0 starts) for the Rockies last season and he was 1-2 with a 3.40 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP. VERDICT: The Rockies probably want to bring back Beimel back but he won’t come cheap as he is one of the better free agent lefty relievers on the market.

Octavio Dotel: 36-year old righty reliever Octavio Dotel pitched in 8 games (0 starts) for the Rockies last year and he was 0-1 with a 5.06 ERA and a 1.88 WHIP. Dotel pitched in 68 games (0 starts) with the Dodgers, Pirates & Rockies last season and he was 3-4 with 22 saves, a 4.08 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP. The Rockies have a $4.5 million dollar option on Dotel for 2011 with a $500K buyout. VERDICT: Dotel will get paid the $500K by the Rockies and they won’t pursue him.
