Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Saturday 25 December 2010 at 12:48 pm

The Rockies have signed 27-year old lefty swinging infielder Tug Hulett to a minor league deal. Hulett played in 105 games in AAA-ball last season and he was 78 of 350 (.223 avg, .710 OPS) with 49 runs scored, 7 homers, 41 RBIs and 6 stolen bases. Hulett last played in the majors in 2009 with the Royals. He has played in 45 games in his first two years in the majors and he is 13 of 67 (.194 avg, .524 OPS) with 6 runs scored, 1 homer, 3 RBIs and an amazing 23 whiffs. Hulett will get a chance to win a bench job for the Rockies next spring.

The Colorado Rockies sign Matt Macri

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Saturday 25 December 2010 at 12:45 pm

The Rockies have signed 28-year old righty swinging infielder Matt Macri to a minor league deal. Macri played in 98 games in AAA-ball last season and he was 85 of 338 (.251 avg, .727 OPS) with 46 runs scored, 9 homers, 36 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. He got a cup of coffee with the Twins in 2008 when he played in 18 games in which he was 11 of 34 (.324 avg, .802 OPS) with 3 runs scored, 1 homer, 4 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Macri will get a chance next spring to win a job on the Rockies’ bench.

The Colorado Rockies sign Jeff Salazar

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Saturday 25 December 2010 at 12:43 pm

The Rockies have signed 30-year old lefty swinging outfielder Jeff Salazar to a minor league deal. Salazar played in 117 games in AAA-ball last season and he was 110 of 436 (.252 avg, .724 OPS) with 59 runs scored, 16 homers, 55 RBIs and 26 stolen bases. He last played in the majors in 2009 with the Pirates. Salazar has played in 168 games in his first four years in the majors and he is 69 of 298 (.232 avg, .684 OPS) with 44 runs scored, 4 homers, 31 RBIs and 5 stolen bases. The Rockies will stash Salazar in AAA-ball for depth purposes when the 2011 season starts.

The Colorado Rockies acquire Matt Lindstrom from the Astros

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Saturday 25 December 2010 at 12:40 pm

The Rockies have acquired 30-year old righty reliever Matt Lindstrom from the Astros for 24-year old righty reliever/starter Jonnathan Aristil and 23-year old lefty starting pitcher Wes Musick. Lindstrom pitched in 58 games (0 starts) for the Astros last season and he was 2-5 with 23 saves, a 4.39 ERA and a 1.65 WHIP. He has now pitched in 249 games (0 starts) in his first four years in the majors and he is 10-13 with 43 saves, a 4.00 ERA and a 1.49 WHIP. Lindstrom will likely serve as a set-up man for the Rockies and he will also be an insurance policy should Huston Street get injured again in 2011.

Jonnathan Aristil pitched in 33 games (4 starts) in A+AA+AAA-ball last season and he was 2-5 with a 5.90 ERA and a 1.63 WHIP. Wes Musick pitched in 23 games (all starts) in A-ball last season and he was 8-7 with a 4.05 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP. Neither of these guys were considered top prospects by the Rockies so I like this deal for them.

The Colorado Rockies ink Billy Buckner

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Wednesday 22 December 2010 at 8:49 am

The Rockies have signed 27-year old righty starting pitcher Billy Buckner to a minor league deal. Buckner pitched in 3 games (all starts) for the D-Backs last season and he was 0-3 with a 11.08 ERA and a 2.39 WHIP. He has now pitched in 36 games (21 starts) in his first four years in the majors and he is 6-11 with a 6.25 ERA and a 1.64 WHIP. The Rockies will be in trouble if they need Buckner at any point in 2011 because he throws extended batting practice for opposing teams.

The Colorado Rockies sign Mike Jacobs

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Saturday 18 December 2010 at 7:21 pm

The Rockies have signed 30-year old lefty swinging 1B Mike Jacobs to a minor league deal. Jacobs played in 7 games for the Mets last season and he was 5 of 24 (.208 avg, .671 OPS) with 1 run scored, 1 homer and 2 RBIs. He also played in 120 games in AAA-ball last season and he was 128 of 469 (.273 avg, .817 OPS) with 79 runs scored, 21 homers and 91 RBIs. Jacobs has now played in 556 games in parts of six years in the majors and he is 489 of 1,930 (.253 avg, .787 OPS) with 244 runs scored, 100 homer and 310 RBIs. Jacobs won’t likely make the Rockies unless Todd Helton’s back starts to act up again but I still like this signing for the Rockies as it would be a smart move to stash him in AAA.

The Colorado Rockies acquire Jose Morales from the Twins

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Friday 17 December 2010 at 11:20 am

The Rockies have acquired 27-year old switch hitting catcher Jose Morales from the Twins for 21-year old lefty reliever Paul Bargas. Morales played in 19 games for the Twins last season and he was 7 of 36 (.194 avg, .545 OPS) with 4 runs scored and 7 RBIs. He has now played in 74 games in his first three years in the majors and he is 47 of 158 (.297 avg, .725 OPS) with 19 runs scored and 14 RBIs. Bargas pitched in 58 games (0 starts) in A-ball last season and he was 5-4 with 5 saves, a 3.59 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP. He pitched in 77 games (1 start) in his first two years in the minors with the Rockies and he was 8-5 with 7 saves, a 3.12 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP. The Rockies paid a decent price to land a good hitting catcher to team with Chris Iannetta in 2011.

The Colorado Rockies sign Geno Espineli

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Saturday 11 December 2010 at 2:45 pm

The Rockies have signed 28-year old lefty reliever Geno Espineli to a minor league deal. Espineli pitched in 53 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball last season and he was 5-5 with 12 saves, a 3.26 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP. He last pitched in the majors in 2008 with the Giants. He has pitched in 15 games (0 starts) in his major league career and he is 2-0 with a 5.06 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP. Espineli will get a shot next spring to win a spot in the Rockies’ bullpen.

The Colorado Rockies sign Ty Wigginton

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Tuesday 7 December 2010 at 9:40 am

The Rockies have signed 33-year old righty swinging infielder Ty Wigginton to a 2-year, $7.5 million dollar contract. Wigginton played in 154 games for the Baltimore Orioles last season and he was 144 of 581 (.248 avg, .727 OPS) with 63 runs scored, 22 homers and 76 RBIs. He made the All-Star team for the first time in his career last season. Wigginton has now played in 1,060 games in his first 9 years in the majors and he is 990 of 3,706 (.267 avg, .772 OPS) with 457 runs scored, 143 homers, 501 RBIs and 33 stolen bases. Wigginton’s biggest role will likely be sharing time at 1B with the declining Todd Helton, but he can also handle playing 2B, 3B and maybe even a corner outfield spot. I see the Rockies finding 500 at bats for Wigginton somehow in 2011.

The Colorado Rockies acquire Jose Lopez from the Mariners

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Friday 3 December 2010 at 8:58 am

The Rockies have acquired 27-year old 2B/3B Jose Lopez from the Mariners for 24-year old righty Chaz Roe. Lopez will likely move back to 2B for the Rockies to replace Clint Barmes who was dealt to the Astros. Lopez played in 150 games for the Mariners last season and he was 142 of 593 (.239 avg, .609 OPS) with 49 runs scored, 10 homers, 58 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. He has now played in 873 games in his first 7 years in the majors and he is 897 of 3,374 (.266 avg, .697 OPS) with 380 runs scored, 80 homers, 341 RBIs and 23 stolen bases. Maybe a change of scenery and a move back to his old position will spur him to rebound to his old productive self. Chaz Roe started 27 games in AAA-ball for the Rockies last season and he was 9-13 with a 5.98 ERA and a 1.67 WHIP. He pitched in 126 games (all starts) in his first six years in the minors for the Rockies and he was 42-38 with a 4.48 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP. The Rockies are taking a chance on Lopez and the price was right to do so.
