The Colorado Rockies sign Alfredo Amezaga

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Wednesday 26 January 2011 at 6:30 pm

The Rockies have signed 33-year old switch hitting 2B/SS/OF Alfredo Amezaga to a minor league deal. Due to a knee injury last season he only played in 1 game in AA-ball for the Dodgers in which he went 2 for 2 with 1 run scored and 1 RBI. He last played in the majors back in 2009 for the Florida Marlins. Amezaga has played in 544 games in his first 8 years in the majors and he is 334 of 1,331 (.251 avg, .652 OPS) with 167 runs scored, 12 homers, 106 RBIs and 49 stolen bases. Amezaga can play everywhere but pitcher, catcher and 1B so he could be valuable to the Rockies’ bench in 2011 if he makes the team out of spring training.

The Colorado Rockies sign Chad Moeller

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Wednesday 26 January 2011 at 6:27 pm

The Colorado Rockies have signed 35-year old righty swinging catcher Chad Moeller to a minor league deal. He played in 9 games for the Yankees last season and he was 3 of 14 (.214 avg, .695 OPS) with 2 runs scored. Moeller has now played in 501 games in his first 11 years in the majors and he is 315 of 1,392 (.226 avg, .640 OPS) with 146 runs scored, 29 homers, 132 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. Moeller will likely get a shot to compete with Jose Morales this spring for the right to back up Chris Iannetta in 2011.

UPDATE: (3/11/2011) - The Rockies have released Chad Moeller.

The Colorado Rockies DFA Samuel Deduno

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Tuesday 25 January 2011 at 11:18 am

The Rockies have designated 27-year old starter/reliever Samuel Deduno for assignment to make room on the roster for Clayton Mortensen. Deduno pitched in 4 games (0 starts) for the Rockies last season and he was 0-0 with a 3.38 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP. He also pitched in 10 games (all starts) in A+AAA-ball last year in which he was 3-3 with a 3.83 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP. This was kind of a suprise move by the Rockies as Deduno came into last season as the Rockies’ #11 prospect according to Baseball America.

UPDATE: (1/29/2011) - The San Diego Padres have claimed Deduno off waivers.

The Colorado Rockies acquire Clayton Mortensen from the A’s

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Tuesday 25 January 2011 at 11:16 am

The Rockies have acquired 25-year old righty starting pitcher Clayton Mortensen from the A’s for 23-year old righty starting pitcher Ethan Hollingsworth. Mortensen pitched in 1 game (1 start) for the A’s last season and he was 0-0 with a 4.50 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP. He also pitched in 26 games (all starts) in AAA-ball last year and he was 13-6 with a 4.25 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP. Mortensen has now pitched in 8 games (7 starts) in parts of two seasons in the majors and he is 2-4 with a 7.12 ERA and a 1.72 WHIP. Hollingsworth pitched in 27 games (all starts) in A+AA-ball for the Rockies last season and he was 12-8 with a 3.69 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP. I like this deal for the Rockies as Mortensen could help them in the rotation or the pen this year.

The Colorado Rockies sign Willy Taveras

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Monday 24 January 2011 at 5:50 pm

The Rockies have signed 29-year old righty swinging outfielder Willy Taveras to a minor league deal. He played in 27 games for the Nationals last season and he was 7 of 35 (.200 avg, .500 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 4 RBIs and 1 stolen bases. Taveras has now played in 670 games in his first 7 years in the majors and he is 662 of 2,412 (.274 avg, .647 OPS) with 358 runs scored, 8 homers, 128 RBIs and 195 stolen bases. Taveras will get a chance to win a job on the Rockies’ bench this spring but he’s a longshot.

The Colorado Rockies sign Joe Crede

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Thursday 20 January 2011 at 12:34 pm

The Rockies have signed 29-year old righty swinging 3B Joe Crede to a minor league deal. Crede did not play last season because he didn’t find a deal he thought was worth taking. Crede played in 90 games for the Twins in 2009 and he was 75 of 333 (.225 avg, .703 OPS) with 42 runs scored, 15 homers and 48 RBIs. Crede has now played in 888 games in his first 10 years in the majors and he is 787 of 3,101 (.254 avg, .748 OPS) with 392 runs scored, 140 homers, 470 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. If Crede is healthy (he has had back issues in the past), he should be an asset to the Rockies as a backup at both 1B and 3B in 2011. This is a low risk/high reward signing for the Rockies.

UPDATE: (2/17/2011) - Joe Crede decided not to report to camp so he has become a free agent.

The Colorado Rockies re-sign Jason Giambi

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Monday 17 January 2011 at 4:08 pm

The Colorado Rockies have re-signed 40-year old lefty swinging 1B Jason Giambi. Giambi played in 83 games last season for the Rockies and he was 43 of 176 (.244 avg, .776 OPS) with 17 runs scored, 6 homers, 35 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. He has now played in 2,039 games in his first 16 years in the majors and he is 1,914 of 6,801 (.281 avg, .928 OPS) with 1,176 runs scored, 415 homers, 1,365 RBIs and 20 stolen bases. Giambi will likely have the same role with the Rockies that he had in 2011 providing them with a thumper off the bench.

The Colorado Rockies sign Jim Miller

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Monday 17 January 2011 at 10:16 am

The Rockies have signed 28-year old righty reliever Jim Miller to a minor league deal. Miller pitched in 33 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball last season and he was 1-0 with a 4.84 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP. His only major league experience came in 2008 with the Baltimore Orioles. He pitched in 8 games (0 starts) for the Orioles in 2008 and he was 0-2 with 1 save, a 1.17 ERA and a 1.83 WHIP. Miller will likely get a chance to win a job in the bullpen this spring, but more than likely he will start the year in AAA.

The Colorado Rockies sign Claudio Vargas

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Tuesday 11 January 2011 at 11:08 pm

The Rockies have signed 32-year old righty reliever Claudio Vargas to a minor league deal. Vargas pitched in 17 games (0 starts) for the Brewers last season and he was 1-0 with a 7.32 ERA and a 1.93 WHIP. He has now pitched in 217 games (114 starts) in his first 8 years in the majors and he is 48-40 with 1 save, a 4.83 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP. Vargas will get a chance to win a job as the long man in the Rockies’ bullpen this spring.

The Colorado Rockies sign Sean White

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Tuesday 11 January 2011 at 9:14 am

The Rockies have inked 29-year old righty reliever Sean White to a minor league deal. White pitched in 38 games (0 starts) for the Mariners last season and he was 0-1 with a 5.24 ERA and a 1.63 WHIP. He has now pitched in 105 games (0 starts) in his first three years in the majors and he is 4-4 with 1 save, a 4.16 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP. White will get a shot this spring to make the Rockies’ bullpen.
