Jason Hammel is off to a great start for the Colorado Rockies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Throwing Well by chinmusic on Monday 9 May 2011 at 8:32 am

28-year old righty starting pitcher Jason Hammel is off to the best start of his major league career. He has pitched in 6 games (all starts) for the Rockies so far this year and he is 3-1 with a 2.63 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP. Hammel is pounding the strike zone as he has only walked 11 batters in his first 37 2/3 innings for the Rockies so far this year. The Rockies hope this isn’t a mirage because they really need Hammel to pitch well this year because of all of the injuries in the starting rotation.

The Colorado Rockies place Esmil Rogers on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Saturday 7 May 2011 at 7:53 pm

The Colorado Rockies have placed 25-year old righty starting pitcher Esmil Rogers on the 15-day disabled list due to a strained lat muscle. Rogers has pitched in 5 games (4 starts) for the Rockies so far this year and he is 3-1 with a 7.66 ERA and a 1.88 WHIP. He has already walked 13 batters and he has given up 29 hits (4 homers) in his first 22 1/3 innings this year, as he has been very generous to opposing hitters. The Rockies have recalled 26-year old righty starter/reliever Clayton Mortensen to replace Rogers. Mortensen pitched in 2 games (0 starts) earlier this year for the Rockies and he is 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a 0.50 WHIP. He has given up only 2 hits in his first 8 innings for the Rockies.

Tyler Matzek is off to a very slow start in the minors for the Colorado Rockies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by chinmusic on Thursday 5 May 2011 at 5:44 pm

20-year old lefty starting pitcher Tyler Matzek came into this season as the Rockies’ #1 prospect according to Baseball America. But, he’s off to a rough start in the minors this year. Matzek has pitched in 5 games (all starts) in A-ball so far this year and he is 0-2 with a 8.31 ERA and a 2.08 WHIP. He has walked a stunning 20 batters in only 17 1/3 innings so far this year and that’s the reasons for his struggles as he has only allowed 16 hits and whiffed 19 batters so far this year. Matzek has now pitched in 23 games (all starts) in his first two years in the minors and he is 5-3 with a 3.80 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP. If Matzek tightens up his control quite a bit….he might get placed on the fast track to the Rockies. But, if he continues to struggle with his control, the Rockies will take it very slow with him.

The Colorado Rockies place Ty Wigginton on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Tuesday 3 May 2011 at 6:24 pm

The Rockies have placed veteran infielder Ty Wigginton on the 15-day disabled list due to a strained right oblique muscle. Wigginton has played in 20 games for the Rockies so far this year and he is 14 for 60 (.233 avg, .692 OPS) with 5 runs scored, 2 homers, 10 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. The Rockies have recalled 26-year old lefty swinging 3B Ian Stewart to replace Wigginton on the active roster. Stewart had a rough start to the 2011 season for the Rockies before getting demoted to AAA. He has played in 12 games for the Rockies so far this year and he is 2 for 26 (.077 avg, .220 OPS) with 2 runs scored, 0 homers, 0 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Stewart has also whiffed 11 times this year already often looking hopeless at the plate. But, Stewart might be ready to turn things around as he was ripping the ball in the minors. Stewart played in 11 games in AAA-ball this year and he was 13 for 36 (.361 avg, 1.250 OPS) with 8 runs scored, 3 homers, 13 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Stewart will likely share time at 3B until Wigginton is ready to return to action.

Jonathan Herrera is making the most of his P.T. with the Colorado Rockies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well by chinmusic on Tuesday 3 May 2011 at 6:19 pm

With Ian Stewart and Jose Lopez off to very slow starts, 26-year old switch-hitting Jonathan Herrera has gotten a lot of P.T. at 2B and he’s making the most of it. Herrera has played in 21 games for the Rockies so far this year and he is 21 for 70 (.300 avg, .830 OPS) with 10 runs scored, 1 homer, 5 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. Herrera is also showing an outstanding eye at the plate as he has walked 16 times already this year while whiffing 8 times. I have a feeling that Herrera might just get to keep his starting job as long as his bat doesn’t slow down.
