The Colorado Rockies sign Ramon Hernandez

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Wednesday 30 November 2011 at 10:45 pm

The Rockies have signed 35-year old righty swinging catcher Ramon Hernandez to a 2-year, $6.4 million dollar deal. He played in 91 games for the Reds last year and he was 84 for 298 (.282 avg, .788 OPS) with 28 runs scored, 12 homers and 36 RBIs. Hernandez has now played in 1,457 games in his first 13 years in the majors and he is 1,295 of 4,873 (.266 avg, .749 OPS) with 560 runs scored, 161 homers, 723 RBIs and 8 stolen bases. Hernandez is a better catcher than Chris Iannetta, so that makes me like the Iannetta/Chatwood trade even more for the Rockies.

The Colorado Rockies deal Chris Iannetta to the Angels

The Rockies have dealt 28-year old righty swinging catcher Chris Iannetta to the Angels for 21-year old righty starting pitcher Tyler Chatwood. Iannetta played in 112 games for the Rockies last year and he was 82 for 345 (.238 avg, .785 OPS) with 51 runs scored, 14 homers, 55 RBIs and 6 stolen bases. He played in 458 games in his six years with the Rockies and he was 336 of 1,429 (.235 avg, .788 OPS) with 196 runs scored, 63 homers, 236 RBIs and 7 stolen bases. Iannetta never lived up to the expectations that the Rockies had for him, so they aren’t going to miss him going forward. Tyler Chatwood is a young starting pitcher with a nice upside. Chatwood pitched in 27 games (25 starts) for the Angels as a rookie last year and he was 6-11 with a 4.75 ERA and a 1.67 WHIP. He does have some things he needs to work on though as he gave up 166 hits and walked 71 batters in only 142 innings for the Angels. But, Chatwood is more than young enough to turn things around soon, so expect him to win a spot in the Rockies’ rotation in 2012.

Troy Tulowitzki of the Colorado Rockies finished 8th place in the 2011 N.L. MVP Voting

Blogged under Awards, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Wednesday 23 November 2011 at 9:19 am

27-year old righty swinging shortstop Troy Tulowitzki finished in 8th place in the MVP Voting in 2011. He played in 143 games last year for the Rockies and he was 162 of 537 (.302 avg, .916 OPS) with 81 runs scored, 30 homers, 105 RBIs and 9 stolen bases. Tulowitzki has now played in 697 games in his first six years with the Rockies and he is 770 of 2,632 (.293 avg, .869 OPS) with 438 runs scored, 122 homers, 443 RBIs and 51 stolen bases.

Here is a trio of free agents that would be good fits for the Colorado Rockies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, If I Were GM by chinmusic on Monday 21 November 2011 at 4:54 pm

I think if the Rockies signed the trio of players I suggest they sign, that they would be a lot better team in 2012. Here they are:

1. Kelly Johnson - Lefty hitting 2B Kelly Johnson would love playing half of his games at Coors Field. After losing out on Mark Ellis (he signed with the Dodgers), the Rockies need a new starting 2B and Johnson would be a nice upgrade for them.

2. Chris Snyder - Righty swinging catcher Chris Snyder could back up Chris Iannetta and possibly push him for P.T.

3. Bartolo Colon - Righty starting pitcher Bartolo Colon proved last year that he’s all the way back from rotator cuff problems. He would fit in very nicely at the back end of the Rockies’ starting rotation.

The Colorado Rockies deal Ty Wiggington to the Phillies

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Monday 21 November 2011 at 4:48 pm

The Rockies have dealt 34-year old righty swinging 1B/3B Ty Wigginton to the Phillies for either a player to be named later or cash. Wigginton played in 130 games for the Rockies last year and he was 97 of 401 (.242 avg, .731 OPS) with 52 runs scored, 15 homers, 47 RBIs and 8 stolen bases. The Rockies are going to miss Wigginton’s versatility, but it opens up money in the budget that they can spend elsewhere to make the team better.

The Colorado Rockies sign Brandon Wood

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Friday 18 November 2011 at 8:36 am

The Rockies have signed 26-year old righty swinging infielder Brandon Wood to a minor league deal. Wood played in 105 games for the Angels & Pirates last year and he was 54 for 250 (.216 avg, .610 OPS) with 26 runs scored, 7 homers and 31 RBIs. He has now played in 272 games in his first five years in the majors and he is 130 for 700 (.186 avg, .513 OPS) with 65 runs scored, 18 homers, 64 RBIs and 5 stolen bases. Wood has whiffed a stunning 218 times while only walking 32 times so far in his career. The Rockies are just taking a flier on Wood, who was one of the best prospects in all of baseball not too long ago.
