Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Tuesday 20 December 2011 at 8:45 pm

The Rockies have signed 29-year old righty starter/reliever Carlos Torres to a minor league deal. Torres pitched in 6 games (all starts) for Yomiuri in Japan last year and he was 1-2 with a 6.26 ERA and a 1.54 WHIP. He last pitched in the majors in 2010 with the White Sox. He has now pitched in 13 games (6 starts) in his first two years in the majors and he is 1-3 with a 6.86 ERA and a 1.88 WHIP. Torres will likely start the 2012 season in AAA for the Rockies.

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Tuesday 20 December 2011 at 7:13 pm

The Rockies have signed 38-year old righty swinging 3B Casey Blake to a 1-year, $2 million dollar deal. Blake played in 63 games for the Dodgers last year and he was 51 for 202 (.252 avg, .713 OPS) with 32 runs scored, 4 homers, 26 RBIs and 1 stolen base. He has now played in 1,265 games in his first 13 years in the majors and he is 1,186 of 4,500 (.264 avg, .778 OPS) with 644 runs scored, 167 homers, 616 RBIs and 36 stolen bases. Blake will get a shot to compete for the starting 3B job for the Rockies next spring.

UPDATE: (3/29/2012) - The Rockies have released Casey Blake.

The Colorado Rockies sign Wil Nieves

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Saturday 17 December 2011 at 9:06 am

The Rockies have signed 34-year old righty swinging catcher Wil Nieves. Nieves played in 20 games for the Brewers last year and he was 7 for 50 (.140 avg, .369 OPS) with 2 runs scored. Nieves has now played in 282 games in his first 8 years in the majors and he is 166 for 751 (.221 avg, .557 OPS) with 55 runs scored, 5 homers, 73 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. Nieves will get a shot next spring to win the backup catcher job for the Rockies, but, he will likely start the season in AAA.

The Colorado Rockies sign Wilkin Castillo

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Friday 16 December 2011 at 4:39 pm

The Rockies have signed 27-year old switch-hitting catcher/infielder Wilkin Castillo to a minor league deal. Castillo played in 80 games in AAA-ball for the Braves last year and he was 73 for 279 (.262 avg, .650 OPS) with 19 runs scored, 5 homers, 37 RBIs and 5 stolen bases. He last played in the majors back in 2009 for the Reds. Castillo has played in 22 games in his first two years in the majors and he is 11 for 35 (.314 avg, .676 OPS) with 6 runs scored, 0 homers and 2 RBIs. Castillo’s versatility in the field (he can play everywhere), might get him to Coors Field and the Rockies at some point in 2012.

The Colorado Rockies sign Michael Cuddyer

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Friday 16 December 2011 at 12:02 pm

The Rockies have signed 32-year old righty swinging OF/1B Michael Cuddyer to a 3-year, $31.5 million dollar deal. Cuddyer played in 139 games for the Twins last year and he was 150 for 529 (.284 avg, .805 OPS) with 70 runs scored, 20 homers, 70 RBIs and 11 stolen bases. He has now played in 1,139 games in his first 11 years in the majors and he is 1,106 of 4,072 (.272 avg, .794 OPS) with 606 runs scored, 141 homers, 580 RBIs and 52 stolen bases. It will be interesting to see when Cuddyer plays in the field. I would think that most of his time would come in the outfield, but he will be able to give Todd Helton a rest whenever he needs one.

The Colorado Rockies non-tender Ryan Spilborghs

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Tuesday 13 December 2011 at 9:37 am

The Rockies have decided not to tender 32-year old righty swinging outfielder Ryan Spilborghs a contract for the 2012 season, making him a free agent. Spilborghs played in 98 games for the Rockies last year and he was 42 for 200 (.210 avg, .588 OPS) with 22 runs scored, 3 homers, 22 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. He played in 619 games in his seven years with the Rockies and he was 424 of 1,561 (.272 avg, .768 OPS) with 222 runs scored, 42 homers, 218 RBIs and 31 stolen bases. Until last year, Spilborghs was a solid player. In his defense, he was playing hurt most of the year. He shouldn’t have much of a problem finding a new job, but the Rockies should be o.k. without him in 2012.

The Colorado Rockies non-tender Cole Garner

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Tuesday 13 December 2011 at 9:34 am

The Rockies have decided not to tender 26-year old righty swinging outfielder Cole Garner a contract for the 2012 season, making him a free agent. Garner played in 4 games for the Rockies last year and he was 2 for 9 (.222 avg, .522 OPS) with 1 run scored and 3 RBIs. He also played in 46 games in AAA-ball last year and he was 61 for 185 (.330 avg, .923 OPS) with 38 runs scored, 8 homers, 35 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. Despite playing well in AAA, the Rockies should be o.k. without Garner moving forward.

The Colorado Rockies deal Ian Stewart to the Chicago Cubs

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Friday 9 December 2011 at 10:36 am

The Rockies have dealt 26-year old lefty swinging 3B Ian Stewart and 26-year old righty reliever Casey Weathers to the Cubs for 23-year old righty swinging 2B/3B D.J. LeMahieu and 26-year old lefty swinging outfielder Tyler Colvin. D.J. LeMahieu came into last season as the Cubs’ #13 prospect according to Baseball America. He played in 37 games in his first taste of the majors for the Cubs last year and he was 15 for 60 (.250 avg, .546 OPS) with 3 runs scored, 0 homers and 4 RBIs. He also played in 108 games in AAA-ball last year in which he was 132 of 414 (.319 avg, .777 OPS) with 55 runs scored, 5 homers, 50 RBIs and 9 stolen bases. LeMahieu will have a good shot of winning the starting 2B job for the Rockies next spring. Tyler Colvin was almost as bad as Ian Stewart was last season. He played in 80 games for the Cubs last year and he was 31 for 206 (.150 avg, .509 OPS) with 17 runs scored, 6 homers and 20 RBIs. Colvin has now played in 221 games in his first three years in the majors and he is 125 of 581 (.215 avg, .696 OPS) with 78 runs scored, 26 homers, 78 RBIs and 6 stolen bases. The Rockies hope that the light air of Denver will revive Colvin’s bat.

Ian Stewart was a complete bust for the Rockies in 2011, after playing decent for them in 2009 and 2010. Stewart played in 48 games for the Rockies last year and he was 19 for 122 (.156 avg, .464 OPS) with 14 runs scored, 0 homers, 6 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. He played in 432 games in his five years with the Rockies and he was 293 of 1,242 (.236 avg, .751 OPS) with 178 runs scored, 54 homers, 187 RBIs and 16 stolen bases. 26-year old Casey Weathers came into last year as the Rockies’ #14 prospect according to Baseball America. He pitched in 44 games (0 starts) in AA-ball for the Rockies last year and he was 2-2 with a 5.32 ERA and a 1.75 WHIP.

I like this deal for both teams as changes of scenery could cause a revival of Tyler Colvin with the Rockies and Ian Stewart with the Cubs.

The Colorado Rockies sign Mike Ekstrom

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Thursday 8 December 2011 at 2:27 pm

The Rockies have signed 28-year old righty reliever Mike Ekstrom to a minor league deal. He pitched in 1 game (0 starts) for the Tampa Bay Rays last year and he was 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP. He also pitched in 46 games (1 start) in AAA-ball last year and he was 6-4 with 5 saves, a 4.35 ERA and a 1.52 WHIP. Ekstrom has now pitched in 46 games (0 starts) in his first four years in the majors and he is 0-3 with a 5.36 ERA and a 1.59 WHIP. He will get a shot to win a spot in the Rockies’ bullpen this spring.

The Colorado Rockies deal Huston Street to the Padres

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Wednesday 7 December 2011 at 2:11 pm

The Rockies have dealt 28-year old righty reliever Huston Street to the Padres for a player to be named later. Street pitched in 62 games (0 starts) for the Rockies last year and he was 1-4 with 29 saves, a 3.86 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP. He has now pitched in 170 games (0 starts) in his three years with the Rockies and he was 9-9 with 84 saves, a 3.50 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP. Street finishes his time with the Rockies ranked #3 in career saves with 84. Rafael Betancourt will take over as the closer for the Rockies, as he did a good job filling in for Street in that role when he was injured last year.

UPDATE: (12/9/2011) - The Rockies have acquired 26-year old lefty starting pitcher Nick Schmidt from the Padres to complete this deal. Schmidt pitched in 14 games (all starts) in Rookie+A-ball last year and he was 4-6 with a 3.91 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP. He has now pitched in 65 games (61 starts) in his first four years in the minors and he is 16-24 with a 4.61 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP.
