The Colorado Rockies acquire Kevin Slowey from the Twins

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Tuesday 6 December 2011 at 11:12 am

The Rockies have acquired 27-year old righty starting pitcher Kevin Slowey from the Twins for a player to be named later. Slowey pitched in 14 games (8 starts) for the Twins last year and he was 0-8 with a 6.67 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP. He was pitching hurt most of the year, so that might explain the horrible numbers he put up. Slowey has now pitched in 100 games (90 starts) in his first five years in the majors and he is 39-29 with a 4.66 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP. He has given up 606 (84 homers) in his first 532 2/3 innings in his major league career, so he doesn’t miss a lot of bats. Slowey minimizes the damage by not walking many batters (84 in his career) while still getting his fair share of strikeouts (395). I like this pickup for the Rockies as Slowey could be a decent starter at the back end of the rotation in 2012.

UPDATE: (12/8/2011) - The Rockies have sent 25-year old righty reliever Daniel Turpen to the Twins to complete this deal. Turpen pitched in 48 games (1 start) in AA-ball for the Rockies last year and he was 2-4 with 11 saves, a 4.83 ERA and a 1.64 WHIP. I really like this deal for the Rockies now.

The Colorado Rockies claim outfielder Jamie Hoffman off waivers

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Monday 5 December 2011 at 7:48 pm

The Rockies have claimed 27-year old righty swinging outfielder Jamie Hoffman off waivers from the division rival Los Angeles Dodgers. Hoffman played in 2 games for the Dodgers last year and he was 0 for 4 (.000 avg, .000 OPS). He also played in 133 games in AAA-ball for the Dodgers last year and he was 141 of 475 (.297 avg, .853 OPS) with 91 runs scored, 22 homers, 84 RBIs and 14 stolen bases. Hoffman has now played in 16 games in his first two years in the majors and he is 4 for 26 (.154 avg, .489 OPS) with 2 runs scored, 1 homer and 7 RBIs. Hoffman will get a shot to make the Rockies next spring.

UPDATE: (3/19/2012) - The Rockies have lost Jamie Hoffman as he has elected free agency over a minor league assignment.
