The Colorado Rockies have underwent a lot of change since last September and a lot of it is positive. Here is a look at the new guys for 2012:
In the field: The Rockies could have four new starters in 2012 in the field. Ramon Hernandez is the likely starting catcher for the Rockies and he should love playing at Coors Field. Michael Cuddyer will be the new RF for the Rockies in 2012. He is a very solid middle of the order hitter who will give the Rockies more thump from the right side. 3B Casey Blake will get a shot to compete for the starting job in spring training. If he can stay healthy, he will be an asset to the Rockies with a bat in his hands. D.J. LeMahieu will have a good shot of winning the starting job at 2B as he came over in the Ian Stewart deal with the Cubs. Brandon Wood and Brendan Harris will try to win backup job on the infield. Tyler Colvin will likely be the Rockies’ #4 outfielder in 2012.
On the mound: The Rockies acquired righty starting pitchers Kevin Slowey and Tyler Chatwood in separate deals over the winter. I look for both of them to be in the Rockies’ opening day rotation in 2012. Chatwood has a nice upside.
Overall: The Rockies went out and made some changes, but, most of them look like good ones to me. Hernandez, LeMahieu, Blake and Cuddyer should add some zip to the Rockies batting order in 2012. I also like the additions of Chatwood and Slowey as the Rockies needed more help in the starting rotation for 2012 and beyond.
