The Rockies dealt for 36-year old righty swinging Marco Scutaro with the idea of making him their starting 2B in 2012. Scutaro played in 113 games for the Red Sox last year and he was 118 of 395 (.299 avg, .781 OPS) with 59 runs scored, 7 homers, 54 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. He has now played in 1,103 games in his first 10 years in the majors and he is 1,019 of 3,768 (.270 avg, .727 OPS) with 538 runs scored, 68 homers, 404 RBIs and 44 stolen bases. Scutaro only played in 2 games at 2B for the Red Sox last year and he made 1 error there. He also played in 109 games at SS last year for the Red Sox and he made 12 errors while showing poor range there. The Rockies are hoping that Scutaro will be solid with the bat and average defensively in 2012 at 2B.
27-year old switch-hitting Jonathan Herrera played in 104 games for the Rockies last year and he was 68 of 281 (.242 avg, .612 OPS) with 28 runs scored, 3 homers, 14 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. He has now played in 208 games in his first three years with the Rockies and he is 145 of 564 (.257 avg, .639 OPS) with 67 runs scored, 4 homers, 38 RBIs and 7 stolen bases. Herrera had only 2 errors in 62 games at 2B for the Rockies last year while showing awful range. He is going to have to fight to make the Rockies’ roster this spring.
26-year old righty swinging Chris Nelson played in 63 games for the Rockies last year and he was 45 of 180 (.250 avg, .664 OPS) with 20 runs scored, 4 homers, 16 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. He has now played in 80 games in his first two years with the Rockies and he is 52 of 205 (.254 avg, .659 OPS) with 27 runs scored, 4 homers, 16 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. 23-year old righty swinging D.J. LeMahieu played in 15 error-free games at 2B for the Cubs last year while showing awful range. He is a natural 3B, but he can handle 2B defensively.
