The Colorado Rockies DFA Jamie Moyer

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Thursday 31 May 2012 at 11:35 am

The Rockies have designated 49-year old lefty starting pitcher Jamie Moyer for assignment. Moyer pitched in 10 games (all starts) for the Rockies this year and he was 2-5 with a 5.70 ERA and a 1.73 WHIP. He gave up 75 hits (11 homers) in only 53 2/3 innings this year, as he got hit really hard. Moyer has pitched in 696 games (638 starts) in his first 25 years in the majors and he is 269-209 with a 4.25 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP. This could be the end of the line for Moyer as a major league pitcher. 27-year old lefty Josh Outman will replace Moyer in the rotation. Outman has pitched in 8 games (0 starts) for the Rockies so far this year and he is 0-1 with a 9.64 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP. 29-year old righty reliever Carlos Torres has been called up to replace Moyer on the pitching staff. Torres will work out of the pen for the Rockies. He pitched in 3 games (0 starts) earlier this year for the Rockies and he was 0-0 with a 2.25 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP.

UPDATE: (6/3/2012) - The Rockies have released Jamie Moyer.

Rafael Betancourt is pitching really well for the Colorado Rockies so far this year

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Throwing Well by chinmusic on Tuesday 29 May 2012 at 9:58 am

37-year old righty reliever Rafael Betancourt came into this season with only 27 career saves in his first 9 years in the majors. But, when the Rockies dealt Huston Street to the Padres over the winter, they turned the closer’s job over to Betancourt. Betancourt has pitched in 19 games (0 starts) for the Rockies so far this year and he is 1-1 with 9 saves, a 2.37 ERA and a 0.95 WHIP. He has only given up 13 hits and 5 walks in his first 19 innings while whiffing 20 batters so far this year as he has been impressive in his new role. The Rockies hope that Betancourt keeps up the good work.

The Colorado Rockies are getting good power production out of their catchers

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries, Playing Well by chinmusic on Thursday 24 May 2012 at 9:21 am

36-year old righty swinging Ramon Hernandez and 23-year old righty swinging Wilin Rosario are really giving the Rockies a lot of thump with their bats so far this year. Wilin Rosario has played in 25 games for the Rockies so far this year and he is 15 for 72 (.208 avg, .771 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 6 homers and 15 RBIs. The Rockies will put up with a lack of batting average (.212 combined) as long as their catchers keep hitting bombs as they have combined for 10 homers and 30 RBIs so far this year.

UPDATE: (5/25/2012) - The Rockies have placed Ramon Hernandez on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 24th due to a left hand strain. Wilin Rosario will take over the full time catcher job until Hernandez is ready to return to action. The Rockies have called up 34-year old righty swinging catcher Wil Nieves to back up Rosario. Nieves has played in 28 games in AAA-ball so far this year for the Rockies and he is 26 for 87 (.299 avg, .778 OPS) with 14 runs scored, 3 homers, 14 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Nieves last played in the majors last season with the Brewers. He has played in 282 games in his first 8 years in the majors and he is 166 for 751 (.221 avg, .557 OPS) with 55 runs scored, 5 homers, 73 RBIs and 2 stolen bases.

Friedrich then started five games in AAA-ball this year and he was 2-1 with a 3.00 ERA and a 0.90 WHIP. He earned the promotion due to the Rockies’ rotation being in shambles and he has excelled so far. Friedrich has started 2 games for the Rockies so far this year and he is 1-0 with a 1.38 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP. He has only given up 11 hits and walked 2 batters in his first 13 innings pitched for the Rockies, while whiffing 17 batters. The Rockies hope that Friedrich keeps up the good work.

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Tuesday 15 May 2012 at 11:19 am

The Rockies have signed 30-year old lefty reliever Tyler Johnson to a minor league deal. Johnson last pitched in the majors way back in 2007 with the St. Louis Cardinals. Johnson has pitched in 116 games (0 starts) in his first three years in the majors and he is 3-5 with a 4.32 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP. Johnson has only given up 67 hits and he has whiffed 65 batters in his first 77 innings in the majors, so he had good stuff. But, he also walked 42 batters. Johnson will need to tighten up his control if he’s going to get back to the majors with the Rockies.

Matt McBride is looking good in AAA for the Colorado Rockies

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by chinmusic on Friday 11 May 2012 at 7:25 am

26-year old righty swinging outfielder Matt McBride is ripping the ball in AAA so far this year. He has played in 33 games in AAA-ball so far this year and he is 46 for 128 (.359 avg, .920 OPS) with 15 runs scored, 4 homers and 22 RBIs. McBride has only walked 4 times this season, so he’s swinging at everything, yet he’s hitting the ball well. McBride has now played in 595 games in his first seven years in the minors and he is 639 for 2,236 (.286 avg, .815 OPS) with 334 runs scored, 73 homers, 373 RBIs and 13 stolen bases. McBride could get his first shot at the show in 2012 if he keeps raking in AAA.

Jamie Moyer has been so-so for the Colorado Rockies so far this year

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Throwing Well by chinmusic on Wednesday 9 May 2012 at 1:59 pm

40-year old lefty starting pitcher Jamie Moyer should probably have three wins already this year, but he doesn’t. Moyer has pitched in 6 games (all starts) for the Rockies so far this year and he is 1-2 with a 4.01 ERA and a 1.66 WHIP. Moyer has given up 46 hits (5 homers) in only 33 2/3 innings this year, but he has only walked 10 batters and whiffed 17….which has limited the damage a little bit. Moyer has now pitched in 692 games (634 starts) in his first 25 years in the majors and he is 268-206 with a 4.23 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP. If Moyer is going to have a legit shot at 300 wins in his career, the Rockies are going to have to start scoring more runs when he pitches.

The Colorado Rockies DFA catcher Eliezer Alfonzo

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Tuesday 8 May 2012 at 3:29 pm

The Rockies have designated 33-year old righty swinging catcher Eliezer Alfonzo for assignment. This is no loss for the Rockies as Alfonzo is still serving his 100-game suspension for a second positive test for performance enhancing drugs.

UPDATE: (5/11/2012) - Eliezer Alfonzo has accepted an outright assignment to AAA-ball after clearing waivers.

UPDATE II: (5/14/2012) - The suspension of Eliezer Alfonzo has been dropped and he will start playing in AAA-ball this week.
