The Rockies have designated 33-year old righty swinging catcher Eliezer Alfonzo for assignment. Alfonzo played in 25 games for the Rockies last year and he was 20 for 75 (.267 avg, .624 OPS) with 2 runs scored, 1 homer and 9 RBIs. He has now played in 193 games in his first six years in the majors and he is 142 of 591 (.240 avg, .648 OPS) with 44 runs scored, 17 homers, 67 RBIs and 1 stolen base. This is no loss for the Rockies as Alfonzo is still serving his 100-game suspension for a second positive test for performance enhancing drugs.

UPDATE: (5/11/2012) – Eliezer Alfonzo has accepted an outright assignment to AAA-ball after clearing waivers.

UPDATE II: (5/14/2012) – The suspension of Eliezer Alfonzo has been dropped and he will start playing in AAA-ball this week.

UPDATE III: (6/6/2012) – The Rockies have released Eliezer Alfonzo. He didn’t play in any games in the minors for them this year.
