The Colorado Rockies had a 2012 season to forget

Injuries and an utter lack of pitching derailed the Rockies in 2012. They finished in last place in the N.L. West with a 64-98 (39.5%) record, 30 games behind the Giants. Here is a look at the players who made the biggest impacts in 2012 for the Rockies, in my opinion:

Team MVP: Carlos Gonzalez – 27-year old lefty swinging outfielder Carlos Gonzalez was the best player on the Rockies in 2012 when he was healthy. Gonzalez played in 135 games for the Rockies last year and he was 157 of 518 (.303 avg, .881 OPS) with 89 runs scored, 22 homers, 85 RBIs and 20 stolen bases.

Best Pitcher: Rafael Betancourt – 37-year old righty closer Rafael Betancourt was easily the best pitcher on the Rockies in 2012. He pitched in 60 games (0 starts) for the Rockies last year and he was 1-4 with 31 saves, a 2.81 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP. Betancourt gave up 53 hits and 12 walks while whiffing 57 batters in only 57 2/3 innings last year, which is pretty impressive.

Biggest Surprise: Wilin Rosario – 23-year old righty swinging catcher Wilin Rosario was supposed to play behind veteran Ramon Hernandez last year. But, Hernandez got injured, opening the door for Rosario and he kicked it in. Rosario played in 117 games for the Rockies last year and he was 107 of 396 (.270 avg, .843 OPS) with 67 runs scored, 28 homers, 71 RBIs and 4 stolen bases.

Biggest Disappointment: Jeremy Guthrie – The Rockies dealt for 33-year old righty starting pitcher Jeremy Guthrie with the idea that he would help them at the top of the rotation. It just didn’t work out that way. Guthrie pitched in 19 games (15 starts) for the Rockies last year and he was 3-9 with a 6.35 ERA and a 1.69 WHIP. Then the Rockies dealt him to the Royals, essentially just to get him off the team.
