The Colorado Rockies sign Russell Mitchell

The Rockies have signed 27-year old righty swinging 3B/1B Russell Mitchell to a minor league deal. Mitchell played in 71 games in AA-ball for the Giants and Marlins last year in which he was 42 of 220 (.191 avg, .594 OPS) with 25 runs scored, 2 homers and 22 RBIs. Mitchell last played in the majors back in 2011 with the Dodgers. He has played in 40 games in his first two years in the majors and he is 14 of 93 (.151 avg, .498 OPS) with 8 runs scored, 4 homers and 7 RBIs. He is going to be a longshot to win a job on the Rockies’ bench next spring.

The Colorado Rockies sign Tommy Manzella

The Rockies have signed 29-year old righty swinging SS/2B Tommy Manzella to a minor league deal. He played in 91 games in AA+AAA-ball last year for the Brewers, White Sox and D-Backs, in which he was 66 of 299 (.221 avg, .562 OPS) with 28 runs scored, 1 homer, 36 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. Manzella last played in the majors back in 2010 with the Astros. He has now played in 90 games in his first two years in the majors and he is 59 of 263 (.224 avg, .528 OPS) with 17 runs scored, 1 homer and 21 RBIs. Manzella will likely start the 2013 season in AAA-ball for the Rockies.

The Rockies have signed 30-year old righty reliever Logan Kensing to a minor league deal. Kensing pitched in 27 games (0 starts) in A+AA+AAA-ball last year and he was 3-1 with 1 save, a 3.97 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. Kensing last pitched in the majors back in 2009 with the Marlins and Nationals. He has pitched in 134 games (3 starts) in his first six years in the majors and he was 8-9 with 2 saves, a 5.81 ERA and a 1.63 WHIP. Kensing will be a longshot to make the Rockies’ bullpen next spring.

The Rockies have signed 27-year old righty reliever Mike McClendon to a minor league deal. McClendon pitched in 9 games (0 starts) for the Brewers last year and he was 0-0 with a 6.43 ERA and a 1.79 WHIP. He also pitched in 33 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball for the Brewers last year and he was 4-3 with 5 saves, a 4.19 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP. McClendon has now pitched in 35 games (0 starts) in his first three years in the majors and he is 5-0 with a 3.88 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP. McClendon will get a shot to win a job in the Rockies’ bullpen next spring.

The Rockies have re-signed 28-year old lefty swinging IF/OF Hernan Iribarren to a minor league deal. He played in 111 games in AAA-ball for the Rockies last year and he was 115 of 381 (.302 avg, .746 OPS) with 62 runs scored, 1 homer, 40 RBIs and 20 stolen bases. Iribarren last played in the majors back in 2009 for the Brewers. He has played in 24 games in his first two years in the majors and he is 5 for 27 (.185 avg, .538 OPS) with 2 runs scored, 0 homers and 2 RBIs. Iribarren’s versatility in the field could be his ticket to the show at some point in the 2013 season for the Rockies.

The Rockies have signed 30-year old righty swinging catcher Gustavo Molina to a minor league deal. Molina played in 35 games in AA+AAA-ball last year for the Yankees and he was 26 for 132 (.197 avg, .609 OPS) with 12 runs scored, 6 homers and 24 RBIs. He last played in the majors in 2011 for the Yankees. He has played in 26 games in his first four years in the minors and he is 6 for 47 (.128 avg, .330 OPS) with 2 runs scored, 0 homers and 1 RBI. Molina will likely start the 2013 season in AAA-ball for the Rockies.

The Rockies have signed 28-year old righty reliever Justin Berg to a minor league deal. Berg pitched in 16 games (2 starts) in Rookie+A-ball last year for the Cubs and he was 0-3 with a 6.68 ERA and a 2.03 WHIP. He last pitched in the majors back in 2011 with the Cubs. Berg has pitched in 60 games (0 starts) in his first three years in the majors and he is 0-1 with a 4.08 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP. If he’s healthy, Berg will get a shot to win a job in the Rockies’ bullpen next spring.

The Colorado Rockies take Danny Rosenbaum in the Rule 5 Draft

The Rockies have selected 25-year old righty starting pitcher Danny Rosenbaum in the Rule 5 Draft away from the Washington Nationals. Rosenbaum pitched in 26 games (all starts) in AA-ball last year and he was 8-10 with a 3.94 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP. He has now pitched in 89 games (84 starts) in his first four years in the minors and he is 26-24 with a 2.84 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP. Rosenbaum is going to have a decent shot of making the Rockies’ pitching staff next spring.

The Colorado Rockies re-sign Jeff Francis

The Rockies have re-signed 31-year old lefty starting pitcher Jeff Francis to a 1-year deal. Francis pitched in 24 games (all starts) for the Rockies last year and he was 6-7 with a 5.58 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP. He has now pitched in 174 games (173 starts) in his first seven years with the Rockies and he is 61-57 with a 4.86 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP. Francis is #2 in games started (173) in Rockies’ history. He is also #2 in wins (61), #7 in ERA (4.86), #5 in WHIP (1.43), #2 in innings pitched (995 2/3), #3 in strikeouts (679) and he is tied for 3rd in shutouts (2) in Rockies’ history. It was smart of the Rockies to bring back Francis for 2013, as he is still a somewhat decent pitcher and the price was probably right.

The Colorado Rockies acquire Wilton Lopez from the Astros

The Rockies have acquired 29-year old righty reliever Wilton Lopez from the Astros for 24-year old righty starting pitcher Alex White and 23-year old righty starting pitcher Alex Gillingham. Lopez pitched in 64 games (0 starts) for the Astros last year and he was 6-3 with 10 saves, a 2.17 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP. He has now pitched in 213 games (2 starts) in his first four years in the majors and he is 13-13 with 11 saves, a 3.14 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP. Lopez will team with closer Rafael Betancourt to set up the Rockies well at the back end of the bullpen in 2013. Alex White was a disappointment for the Rockies. He pitched in 23 games (20 starts) for the Rockies last year and he was 2-9 with a 5.51 ERA and a 1.68 WHIP. He pitched in 33 games (30 starts) in his two years with the Rockies and he was 5-13 with a 6.03 ERA and a 1.69 WHIP. Alex Gillingham pitched in 19 games (all starts) in A-ball for the Rockies last year and he was 6-8 with a 3.66 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP. This was the kind of deal contenders make.
