The Colorado Rockies sign 1B Ryan Garko

The Rockies have signed 32-year old righty swinging 1B Ryan Garko to a minor league deal.  Garko played in 77 games in AA+Independent ball last year and he was 95 of 289 (.329 avg, .909 OPS) with 42 runs scored, 12 homers and 56 RBIs.  He last played in the majors back in 2010 with the Rangers.  Garko has played in 463 games in his first six years in the majors and he is 427 of 1,552 (.275 avg, .781 OPS) with 190 runs scored, 55 homers and 250 RBIs.  Garko will be a longshot to win a bench job with the Rockies this spring.

The Colorado Rockies sign Greg Golson

The Rockies have signed 27-year old righty swinging outfielder Greg Golson to a minor league deal.  Golson played in 109 games in AAA-ball for the White Sox last year and he was 124 of 449 (.276 avg, .721 OPS) with 67 runs scored, 6 homers, 52 RBIs and 20 stolen bases.  He last played in the majors back in 2011 with the Yankees.  Golson has played in 40 games in his first four years in the majors and he is 8 for 41 (.195 avg, .548 OPS) with 6 runs scored, 0 homers, 2 RBIs and 2 stolen bases.  Golson will get a shot to win a backup outfield job this spring.

The Colorado Rockies look in solid shape behind the plate for the 2013 season. 23-year old righty swinging Wilin Rosario will be the starting catcher for the Rockies. He played in 117 games for the Rockies last year and he was 107 of 396 (.270 avg, .843 OPS) with 67 runs scored, 28 homers, 71 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. He needs to improve behind the plate defensively as he was horrid with the glove in 2012. Rosario played in 105 games (100 starts) behind the dish for the Rockies last year and he had 13 errors and 21 passed balls. He did throw out 24 of 88 (27.3%) base stealers last year, but Rockies’ pitchers had a 5.01 ERA with Rosario behind the plate. Rosario has now played in 133 games in his first two years with the Rockies and he is 118 of 450 (.262 avg, .824 OPS) with 73 runs scored, 31 homers, 79 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. 36-year old righty swinging Ramon Hernandez and 34-year old righty swinging Yorvit Torrealba will duke it out in spring training to see who will back up Rosario at catcher for 2013. Hernandez played in 52 games for the Rockies last year and he was 40 of 184 (.217 avg, .601 OPS) with 16 runs scored, 5 homers and 28 RBIs. He played in 46 games (45 starts) behind the plate for the Rockies last year and he had 2 errors and 1 passed ball. He also threw out 7 of 43 (16.3%) runners trying to steal on him last year and pitchers had a 5.45 ERA with him behind the dish. Hernandez has now played in 1,509 games in his first 14 years in the majors and he is 1,335 of 5,057 (.264 avg, .744 OPS) with 576 runs scored, 166 homers, 751 RBIs and 8 stolen bases. Torrealba played in 64 games for the Rangers, Brewers and Blue Jays last year in which he was 44 of 194 (.227 avg, .623 OPS) with 19 runs scored, 4 homers, 17 RBIs and 1 stolen base. He played in 60 games (53 starts) behind the plate last year and he had 2 errors and 4 passed balls. He also threw out 7 of 42 (16.7%) base stealers and pitchers had a 4.04 ERA with him behind the dish.

The Rockies have signed 34-year old righty swinging catcher Yorvit Torrealba to a minor league deal. He played in 64 games for the Brewers, Blue Jays and Rangers last year in which he was 44 of 194 (.227 avg, .623 OPS) with 19 runs scored, 4 homers, 17 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Torrealba has now played in 846 games in his first 12 years in the majors and he is 694 of 2,696 (.257 avg, .702 OPS) with 296 runs scored, 56 homers, 323 RBIs and 19 stolen bases. Torrealba will duke it out for the backup catcher job with Ramon Hernandez this spring.

The Colorado Rockies sign Miguel Batista

The Rockies have signed 41-year old righty starter/reliever Miguel Batista to a minor league deal. He pitched in 35 games (5 starts) for the Braves and Mets last year in which he was 1-3 with a 4.61 ERA and a 1.73 WHIP. Batista has now pitched in 658 games (248 starts) in his first 18 years in the majors and he is 102-115 with 41 saves, a 4.48 ERA and a 1.49 WHIP. Batista will have a good chance of winning a spot on the Rockies’ pitching staff in 2013, if he looks decent in spring training.

The Rockies have signed 26-year old righty starting pitcher Chris Volstad to a minor league deal. He pitched in 21 games (all starts) for the Cubs last year and he was 3-12 with a 6.31 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP. Volstad has now pitched in 124 games (123 starts) in his first five years in the majors and he is 35-51 with a 4.87 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP. Volstad will get a shot to win a shot in the rotation next spring.

The Rockies have signed 30-year old righty reliever Manny Corpas. Corpas pitched in 48 games (0 starts) for the Cubs last year and he was 0-2 with a 5.01 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP. Prior to last season, Corpas pitched his entire career with the Rockies. Corpas has pitched in 280 games (0 starts) in his first five years with the Rockies and he was 12-16 with 34 saves, a 3.93 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP. Corpas is currently #10 in Rockies’ history with his 34 saves.

The Rockies have signed 28-year old righty starter/reliever Tim Gustafson to a minor league deal. He pitched in 32 games (25 starts) in AA+AAA-ball for the Reds last year and he was 7-9 with a 5.39 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP. Gustafson has now pitched in 152 games (92 starts) in his first six years in the minors and he is 27-38 with 4 saves, a 4.92 ERA and a 1.54 WHIP. He will likely start the 2013 in AAA-ball for the Rockies.

The Rockets have signed 31-year old lefty reliever Erick Threets to a minor league deal. He pitched in 52 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball last year for the A’s and Dodgers in which he was 6-4 with 4 saves, a 2.79 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP. He last pitched in the majors in 2010 with the White Sox. He has pitched in 21 games (0 starts) in his first three years in the majors and he is 0-1 with a 3.28 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP. Threets will have a good shot to win a spot in the Rockies’ bullpen next spring.
