The Colorado Rockies are likely going to have a competition for the starting 2B job this spring

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Positional Previews for Season by joelapinski on Sunday 10 February 2013 at 9:45 pm

23-year old Josh Rutledge, 24-year old D.J. LeMahieu and 28-year old switch-hitting Jonathan Herrera will duke it out for the starting 2B job this spring.  Rutledge likely has a small edge heading into spring training.  He played in 73 games for the Rockies last year and he was 76 of 277 (.274 avg, .775 OPS) with 37 runs scored, 8 homers, 37 RBIs and 7 stolen bases.  He is hacker at the plate though as he whiffed 54 times while walking only 9 times last year.  He only played in 7 games (all starts) for the Rockies at 2B last year and he had 0 errors while showing slightly below average range.  He is a natural SS, so he should be able to adjust to playing 2B.  Rutledge also played in 87 games in AA-ball for the Rockies last year and he was 109 of 356 (.306 avg, .846 OPS) with 57 runs scored, 13 homers, 35 RBIs and 14 stolen bases.  D.J. LeMahieu played in 81 games for the Rockies last year and he was 68 of 229 (.297 avg, .742 OPS) with 26 runs scored, 4 homers, 22 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  He played in 67 games (60 starts) at 2B for the Rockies last year and he had 2 errors there while showing out of this world range.  LeMahieu has now played in 118 games in his first two years in the majors and he is 83 of 289 (.287 avg, .702 OPS) with 29 runs scored, 2 homers, 26 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  Herrera played in 86 games for the Rockies last year and he was 59 of 225 (.262 avg, .668 OPS) with 29 runs scored, 3 homers, 12 RBIs and 4 stolen bases.  He played in 19 games (12 starts) at 2B for the Rockies last year and he didn’t have any errors there while showing slightly below average range.  Herrera has now played in 294 games in his first four years in the majors and he is 204 of 789 (.259 avg, .647 OPS) with 96 runs scored, 7 homers, 50 RBIs and 11 stolen bases.  27-year old righty swinging Chris Nelson has a good shot of winning the starting 3B job this spring, but he could handle playing 2B if the need arose for the Rockies.  He played in 21 games (18 starts) at 2B for the Rockies last year and he had 1 error there while showing out of this world range.
