The Colorado Rockies have activated 32-year old right swinging catcher Nick Hundley off the 7-day concussion D.L.  Hundley has played in 7 games so far this year for the Rockies and he is 5 for 22 (.227 avg, .802 OPS) with 2 runs scored, 1 homer and 3 RBIs.  He has now played in 110 games in his first two years with the Rockies and he is 115 of 388 (.296 avg, .807 OPS) with 47 runs scored, 11 homers, 46 RBIs and 5 stolen bases.  The Rockies have sent 28-year old righty swinging catcher Dustin Garneau to AAA to open up a roster spot for Hundley.  Garneau played in 3 games for the Rockies this time around and he was 4 for 10 (.400 avg, 1.200 OPS) with 1 run scored and 1 RBI.  He has now played in 25 games in his first two years with the Rockies and he is 15 of 80 (.188 avg, .599 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 2 homers and 9 RBIs.  The Rockies have to be happy to get Hundley back.

The Colorado Rockies call up a couple of relievers

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General,The Minors by joelapinski on Friday 22 April 2016 at 6:33 pm

The Colorado Rockies have called up 28-year old righty reliever Gonzalez Germen and 23-year old righty reliever Carlos Estevez.  Germen pitched in 5 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball for the Rockies this year and he is 0-0 with 3 saves, a 1.50 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP.  He has pitched in 89 games (1 start) in his first three years in the majors and he is 1-2 with 2 saves, a 4.35 ERA and a 1.54 WHIP.  Estevez pitched in 5 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball this year for the Rockies and he was 1-0 with a 3.18 ERA and a 1.59 WHIP.  Estevez has now pitched in 130 games (15 starts) in his first 6 years in the minors and he is 19-12 with 18 saves, a 3.90 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP.  Germen and Estevez both have live arms, so they could help the Rockies out.

The Colorado Rockies send Jason Gurka to AAA

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Pitching BP,The Minors by joelapinski on Friday 22 April 2016 at 6:23 pm

The Colorado Rockies have sent 28-year old lefty reliever Jason Gurka to AAA.  Gurka pitched in 6 games (0 starts) for the Rockies this year and he was 0-0 with a 9.31 ERA and a 1.86 WHIP.  He has now pitched in 15 games (0 starts) in his first two years with the Rockies and he is 0-0 with a 9.35 ERA and a 2.08 WHIP.  I don’t think Gurka will get another chance with the Rockies for a while, as he has been downright awful for them so far in his career.

The Colorado Rockies DFA David Hale

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by joelapinski on Friday 22 April 2016 at 6:19 pm

The Colorado Rockies have designated 28-year old righty reliever/starter David Hale for assignment.  Hale pitched in 2 games (0 starts) for the Rockies this year and he was 0-0 with a 13.50 ERA and a 3.00 WHIP.  Hale pitched in 19 games (12 starts) in his two years with the Rockies and he is 5-5 with a 6.27 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP.  Hale has now pitched in 66 games (20 starts) in his first four years in the majors and he is 10-10 with a 4.48 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP.  Well, it’s pretty clear that Hale can’t handle pitching in Colorado, but I bet some team will take a chance on turning him around.

UPDATE:  (4/25/2016) – The Rockies have lost David Hale on waivers to the Baltimore Orioles

The Colorado Rockies have acquired 29-year old righty swinging 1B Cody Decker from the Royals for cash considerations.  Decker played in 7 games in AAA-ball for the Royals this year and he was 5 for 18 (.278 avg, 1.214 OPS) with 4 runs scored, 3 homers and 5 RBIs.  Decker has now played in 768 games in his first 8 years in the minors and he is 686 of 2,584 (.265 avg, .874 OPS) with 407 runs scored, 159 homers, 509 RBIs and 5 stolen bases.  Decker’s only Major League experience to this point in his career came last year when he played in 8 games for the Padres in which he was 0 for 11 (.000 avg, .000 OPS) with 1 RBI and 5 whiffs.  He will start out in AAA-ball for the Rockies.

The Colorado Rockies release Kyle Parker

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by joelapinski on Saturday 2 April 2016 at 10:25 am

The Colorado Rockies have released 26-year old righty swinging 1B/OF Kyle Parker.  Parker played in 20 games in spring training for the Rockies and he was 6 for 27 (.222 avg, .509 OPS) with 5 runs scored, 0 homers and 2 RBIs.  He played in 46 games for the Rockies last year and he was 19 of 106 (.179 avg, .535 OPS) with 10 runs scored, 3 homers, 11 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  Parker played in 64 games in his two years with the Rockies and he was 24 of 132 (.182 avg, .513 OPS) with 11 runs scored, 3 homers, 12 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  The Rockies have 1B and the outfield covered, so they won’t miss Parker in 2016.

The Colorado Rockies sign Jeff Bianchi

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by joelapinski on Friday 1 April 2016 at 11:41 am

The Colorado Rockies have signed 29-year old righty swinging infielder Jeff Bianchi to a minor league deal.  Bianchi played in 3 games for the Red Sox last year and he was 0 for 2 (.000 avg, .000 OPS).  He also played in 43 games in AAA-ball last year in which he was 34 of 130 (.262 avg, .644 OPS) with 13 runs scored, 0 homers, 8 RBIs and 4 stolen bases.  Bianchi has now played in 165 games in his first four years in the majors and he is 81 of 377 (.215 avg, .531 OPS) with 34 runs scored, 4 homers, 40 RBIs and 4 stolen bases.

The Colorado Rockies sign Ryan Raburn

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by joelapinski on Friday 4 March 2016 at 3:14 pm

The Colorado Rockies have signed 34-year old righty swinging outfielder Ryan Raburn to a minor league deal.  Raburn played in 82 games for the Indians last year and he was 52 of 173 (.301 avg, .936 OPS) with 22 runs scored, 8 homers and 29 RBIs.  Raburn has now played in 809 games in his first 10 years in the majors and he is 560 of 2,184 (.256 avg, .757 OPS) with 303 runs scored, 82 homers, 322 RBIs and 16 stolen bases.  This was a great pickup for the Rockies as Raburn is a lefty pitcher masher, and the Rockies’ three starting outfielders swinging lefty.  I don’t think he will platoon with anyone, but he will be a solid bat off the bench.

The Colorado Rockies DFA Edgmer Escalona

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by joelapinski on Friday 23 August 2013 at 5:30 pm

The Rockies have designated 26-year old righty reliever Edgmer Escalona for assignment.  He pitched in 37 games (0 starts) for the Rockies this year and he was 1-4 with a 5.67 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP.  Escalona pitched in 78 games (0 starts) in his four years with the Rockies and he was 1-5 with a 4.50 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP.  This won’t be much of a loss if a team claims Escalona off waivers from the Rockies.

UPDATE:  (8/30/2013) – The Rockies have outrighted Edgmer Escalona to AAA-ball.

The Colorado Rockies release Aaron Cook

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General,The Minors by joelapinski on Friday 19 July 2013 at 7:49 pm

The Rockies have released 34-year old righty starting pitcher Aaron Cook.  Cook pitched in 8 games (all starts) in AAA-ball for the Rockies this year and he was 0-5 with a 8.15 ERA and a 1.90 WHIP.  Cook gave up 56 hits and 11 walks while whiffing 22 batters in his 35 1/3 innings in AAA-ball, as he got hit really, really hard.  Cook pitched in 238 games (206 starts) in his 10 years with the Rockies and he was 72-68 with a 4.53 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP.  Cook is the Rockies’ all-time leader in games started (206) and wins (72), innings pitched (1,312 1/3).  Cook is also #4 in ERA (4.53), #8 in WHIP (1.47), #6 in strikeouts (558), #2 in complete games (11) and he’s tied for #3 in Rockies’ history in shutouts (3).  Cook is gone, but not forgotten.  That being said, he won’t be missed.
