Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Playing Well by joelapinski on Thursday 28 April 2016 at 7:27 am

32-year old righty swinging Mark Reynolds and 28-year old lefty swinging Ben Paulsen are giving the Colorado Rockies a lot of production at 1B so far in 2016.  Reynolds has played in 18 games for the Rockies so far this year and he is 14 of 47 (.298 avg, .868 OPS) with 8 runs scored, 1 homer and 5 RBIs.  He was whiffed 18 times already this year, but what you see is what you get with Reynolds…..a lot of power along with a ton of whiffs.  Paulsen has played in 18 games for the Rockies so far this year and he is 14 of 43 (.326 avg, .895 OPS) with 5 runs scored, 1 homer and 9 RBIs.  He has whiffed 13 times so far this year, but the Rockies will put up with it as long as he is raking at the plate.

The Colorado Rockies have placed 35-year old lefty starting pitcher Jorge De La Rosa on the 15-day disabled list due to a strained left groin.  De La Rosa has pitched in 5 games (all starts) for the Rockies so far this year and he is 1-3 with a 10.18 ERA and a 2.07 WHIP.  He has given up 30 hits (7 homers) and 12 walks while whiffing 28 batters in his first 20 1/3 innings this year, as he was getting hit really hard this year.  The Rockies have recalled 25-year old righty starter/reliever Eddie Butler to replace De La Rosa on the pitching staff.  Butler pitched in relief last night for the Rockies in his 2016 debut, as he worked 2 1/3 innings allowing 2 hits, 1 run (it was earned) and he didn’t walk any batters while whiffing 4 of them.  Butler pitched in 19 games (all starts) in his first two years with the Rockies and he is 4-11 with a 6.04 ERA and a 1.83 WHIP.

The Colorado Rockies have activated 32-year old right swinging catcher Nick Hundley off the 7-day concussion D.L.  Hundley has played in 7 games so far this year for the Rockies and he is 5 for 22 (.227 avg, .802 OPS) with 2 runs scored, 1 homer and 3 RBIs.  He has now played in 110 games in his first two years with the Rockies and he is 115 of 388 (.296 avg, .807 OPS) with 47 runs scored, 11 homers, 46 RBIs and 5 stolen bases.  The Rockies have sent 28-year old righty swinging catcher Dustin Garneau to AAA to open up a roster spot for Hundley.  Garneau played in 3 games for the Rockies this time around and he was 4 for 10 (.400 avg, 1.200 OPS) with 1 run scored and 1 RBI.  He has now played in 25 games in his first two years with the Rockies and he is 15 of 80 (.188 avg, .599 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 2 homers and 9 RBIs.  The Rockies have to be happy to get Hundley back.

Jorge De La Rosa is off to a rough start in 2016 for the Colorado Rockies

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Pitching BP by joelapinski on Saturday 23 April 2016 at 12:40 pm

35-year old lefty starting pitcher Jorge De La Rosa is off to a slow start in 2016 for the Colorado Rockies.  He has pitched in 4 games (all starts) for the Rockies so far this year and he is 1-2 with a 9.87 ERA and a 1.86 WHIP.  He has given up 25 hits (4 homers) and he has walked 9 batters while whiffing 23 in his first 17 1/3 innings this year.  The 19 earned runs he has given up so far this year is the most in Major League Baseball!  On a lighter note, he is 3 for 7 (.429 avg, .857 OPS) at the plate with 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs.  If any pitcher on the Rockies has earned a long leash this year, it’s De La Rosa.  He has pitched in 186 games (180 starts) in his first 9 years with the Rockies and he is 79-54 with a 4.30 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP.  He is the Rockies’ all-time leader in both wins (79) and strikeouts (900)!  He is also #3 in games started (180), #3 in ERA (4.30), #3 in WHIP (1.36) and he’s #3 in innings pitched (1024 2/3) in Rockies’ history.

The Colorado Rockies call up a couple of relievers

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General,The Minors by joelapinski on Friday 22 April 2016 at 6:33 pm

The Colorado Rockies have called up 28-year old righty reliever Gonzalez Germen and 23-year old righty reliever Carlos Estevez.  Germen pitched in 5 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball for the Rockies this year and he is 0-0 with 3 saves, a 1.50 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP.  He has pitched in 89 games (1 start) in his first three years in the majors and he is 1-2 with 2 saves, a 4.35 ERA and a 1.54 WHIP.  Estevez pitched in 5 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball this year for the Rockies and he was 1-0 with a 3.18 ERA and a 1.59 WHIP.  Estevez has now pitched in 130 games (15 starts) in his first 6 years in the minors and he is 19-12 with 18 saves, a 3.90 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP.  Germen and Estevez both have live arms, so they could help the Rockies out.

The Colorado Rockies send Jason Gurka to AAA

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Pitching BP,The Minors by joelapinski on Friday 22 April 2016 at 6:23 pm

The Colorado Rockies have sent 28-year old lefty reliever Jason Gurka to AAA.  Gurka pitched in 6 games (0 starts) for the Rockies this year and he was 0-0 with a 9.31 ERA and a 1.86 WHIP.  He has now pitched in 15 games (0 starts) in his first two years with the Rockies and he is 0-0 with a 9.35 ERA and a 2.08 WHIP.  I don’t think Gurka will get another chance with the Rockies for a while, as he has been downright awful for them so far in his career.

The Colorado Rockies DFA David Hale

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by joelapinski on Friday 22 April 2016 at 6:19 pm

The Colorado Rockies have designated 28-year old righty reliever/starter David Hale for assignment.  Hale pitched in 2 games (0 starts) for the Rockies this year and he was 0-0 with a 13.50 ERA and a 3.00 WHIP.  Hale pitched in 19 games (12 starts) in his two years with the Rockies and he is 5-5 with a 6.27 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP.  Hale has now pitched in 66 games (20 starts) in his first four years in the majors and he is 10-10 with a 4.48 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP.  Well, it’s pretty clear that Hale can’t handle pitching in Colorado, but I bet some team will take a chance on turning him around.

UPDATE:  (4/25/2016) – The Rockies have lost David Hale on waivers to the Baltimore Orioles

The Colorado Rockies place Miguel Castro on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injuries,The Minors by joelapinski on Friday 22 April 2016 at 6:15 pm

The Colorado Rockies have placed 21-year old righty reliever Miguel Castro on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 18th due to right shoulder inflammation.  Castro has pitched in 6 games (0 starts) for the Rockies so far this year and he is 0-0 with a 1.50 ERA and a 0.67 WHIP.  He has only given up 2 hits and 2 walks while whiffing 8 batters in his first six innings this year.  This is really going to hurt the Rockies’ bullpen, as Castro is off to a rock solid start in 2016.  The Rockies have activated 24-year old righty starting pitcher Jon Gray to replace Castro on the roster and he will start tonight against the Dodgers at Coors Field.  Gray pitched in 2 games (both starts) on a rehab assignment in A-ball this year and he was 0-1 with a 2.08 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP.  Gray pitched in 9 games (all starts) for the Rockies last year in his first taste of the majors and he was 0-2 with a 5.53 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP.  The Rockies have high hopes for Gray.

The Colorado Rockies acquire Cody Decker from the Royals

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Trades by joelapinski on Wednesday 20 April 2016 at 5:22 pm

The Colorado Rockies have acquired 29-year old righty swinging 1B Cody Decker from the Royals for cash considerations.  Decker played in 7 games in AAA-ball for the Royals this year and he was 5 for 18 (.278 avg, 1.214 OPS) with 4 runs scored, 3 homers and 5 RBIs.  Decker has now played in 768 games in his first 8 years in the minors and he is 686 of 2,584 (.265 avg, .874 OPS) with 407 runs scored, 159 homers, 509 RBIs and 5 stolen bases.  Decker’s only Major League experience to this point in his career came last year when he played in 8 games for the Padres in which he was 0 for 11 (.000 avg, .000 OPS) with 1 RBI and 5 whiffs.  He will start out in AAA-ball for the Rockies.
