The Colorado Rockies are getting solid work out of their catchers in 2013

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well by joelapinski on Thursday 4 July 2013 at 11:50 am

24-year old righty swinging catcher Wilin Rosario is doing the heavy lifting behind the plate for the Rockies so far in 2013.  He has played in 70 games for the Rockies so far this year and he is 70 for 254 (.276 avg, .800 OPS) with 36 runs scored, 13 homers, 41 RBIs and 4 stolen bases.  When Rosario needs a break, 34-year old Yorvit Torrealba takes over behind the dish.  Torrealba has played in 36 games for the Rockies so far this year and he is 29 of 97 (.299 avg, .727 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 0 homers and 9 RBIs.  The Rockies are in good shape behind the plate no matter who is playing on a given day and that’s a good thing.

The Colorado Rockies place Dexter Fowler on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by joelapinski on Tuesday 2 July 2013 at 4:49 pm

The Rockies have placed 27-year old switch-hitting CF Dexter Fowler on the 15-day disabled list due to a right wrist injury.  Fowler played in 18 games in June for the Rockies and he was 20 for 65 (.308 avg, .884 OPS) with 13 runs scored, 2 homers, 7 RBIs and 3 stolen bases.  Fowler hasn’t played in about a week due to his wrist problem, so it made sense to D.L. him.  Fowler has played in 70 games overall this year for the Rockies and he is 75 of 258 (.291 avg, .863 OPS) with 49 runs scored, 10 homers, 26 RBIs and 12 stolen bases.  The Rockies hope that Fowler will only miss a couple of weeks.

Michael Cuddyer is red hot at the plate for the Colorado Rockies right now

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well by joelapinski on Tuesday 2 July 2013 at 6:56 am

34-year old righty swinging RF/1B Michael Cuddyer is on fire at the plate right now for the Colorado Rockies.  Cuddyer has a 27-game hitting streak going on right now.  He has played in 62 games overall this year for the Rockies and he is 84 for 244 (.344 avg, .983 OPS) with 38 runs scored, 14 homers, 48 RBIs and 6 stolen bases.  It’s amazing to me that as hot as Cuddyer has been, he’s still not even half way to Joe DiMaggio’s all-time record of a 56-game hitting streak.  That being said, the Rockies need Cuddyer to keep raking at the plate.

The Colorado Rockies sign 1B/OF Xavier Nady

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by joelapinski on Sunday 30 June 2013 at 4:28 pm

The Rockies have signed 34-year old righty swinging 1B/OF Xavier Nady.  Nady played in 70 games in AAA-ball for the Royals this year and he was 79 for 255 (.310 avg, .868 OPS) with 44 runs scored, 11 homers, 43 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  He last played in the majors in 2012 with the Padres and Nationals.  Nady has played in 939 games in his first 11 years in the majors and he is 792 of 2,932 (.270 avg, .756 OPS) with 361 runs scored, 101 homers, 406 RBIs and 19 stolen bases.  Nady will start his career with the Rockies in AAA-ball.

The Colorado Rockies sign Miguel Batista

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by joelapinski on Friday 28 June 2013 at 7:24 am

The Rockies have signed 42-year old righty reliever/starter Miguel Batista to a minor league deal.  Batista pitched in 8 games (7 starts) earlier this year in AAA-ball for the Blue Jays and he was 1-2 with a 8.36 ERA and a 2.04 WHIP.  Batista last pitched in the majors in 2012 with the Mets and Braves.  He has pitched in 658 games (248 starts) in his first 18 years in the majors and he is 102-115 with 41 saves, a 4.48 ERA and a 1.49 WHIP.  Batista will start his time in AAA-ball for the Rockies.  If he has anything left in the gas tank, Batista could get a shot later this year for the Rockies.

The Colorado Rockies bring back Reid Brignac on a minor league deal

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by joelapinski on Wednesday 26 June 2013 at 6:35 pm

The Rockies have signed 27-year old lefty swinging infielder Reid Brignac to a minor league deal and he will report to AAA.  Brignac played in 29 games earlier this year for the Rockies and he was 12 of 48 (.250 avg, .669 OPS) with 4 runs scored, 1 homer and 6 RBIs.  Brignac has played in 46 games overall this year for the Rockies and Yankees in which he is 17 for 92 (.185 avg, .480 OPS) with 5 runs scored, 1 homer and 6 RBIs.  Brignac has played in 302 games in his first six years in the majors and he is 169 for 763 (.221 avg, .573 OPS) with 74 runs scored, 11 homers, 73 RBIs and 8 stolen bases.  If Brignac plays well in AAA, he will get another shot with the Rockies later this year.

Dan Winkler has been razor sharp in A-ball for the Colorado Rockies in 2013

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by joelapinski on Wednesday 26 June 2013 at 7:26 am

23-year old righty starting pitcher Dan Winkler has been razor sharp for the Rockies so far in 2013.  Winkler has pitched in 15 games (all starts) for the Rockies in A-ball this year and he is 10-2 with a 1.99 ERA and a 0.78 WHIP.  Winkler has only given up 47 hits and 24 walks while whiffing 105 batters in his first 90 2/3 innings so far this year which is pretty darn impressive.  Winkler has now pitched in 52 games (all starts) in his first three years in the minors and he is 25-15 with a 3.59 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP.  Winkler could get promoted in the very near future if he keeps pitching so well.

The Colorado Rockies likely will only make minor tinkering at the trade deadline

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, If I Were GM by joelapinski on Tuesday 25 June 2013 at 9:59 am

The Colorado Rockies are tied for second place in the N.L. West with the Padres with a 39-38 (50.6) record, which has them 3 games behind the Diamondbacks.  The Rockies don’t have a lot of needs, they just need some guys to step up.  Josh Rutledge has been pretty awful so far this year, so the Rockies could look into dealing for a SS like Brendan Ryan (great glove man) or Yuniesky Betancourt (better bat than mitt).  Both Ryan and Betancourt are the kind of guys that would slide into backup roles when Troy Tulowitzki returns to action.  That being said, it would probably be smart of the Rockies to see what they have in Rutledge.  The Rockies could look to make a minor deal for a righty reliever like Joba Chamberlain (Yankees), Louis Coleman (Royals), Greg Burke (Mets) and Burke Badenhop (Brewers) before the trade deadline.  If the Rockies want to go big, they could try to make an improvement at 1B with Paul Konerko or Justin Morneau being the main targets.

The Colorado Rockies release Brett Jacobson

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by joelapinski on Monday 24 June 2013 at 10:23 am

The Rockies have released 26-year old righty reliever Brett Jacobson.  Jacobson pitched in 10 games (1 start) in AAA-ball for the Rockies this year and he was 1-1 with a 9.00 ERA and a 2.53 WHIP.  Jacobson gave up 17 hits and he walked an amazingly awful 26 batters while whiffing 10 of them in 17 innings this year!  Jacobson has now pitched in 175 games (19 starts) in his first six years in the minors and he is 18-18 with 12 saves, a 4.39 ERA and a 1.49 WHIP.  This is no loss moving forward for the Rockies.

The Colorado Rockies acquire Hisanori Takahashi from the Cubs

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Trades by joelapinski on Saturday 22 June 2013 at 2:04 pm

The Rockies have acquired 38-year old lefty reliever Hisanori Takahashi from the Cubs for a player to be named later.  He pitched in 3 games (0 starts) earlier this year for the Cubs and he was 0-0 with a 6.00 ERA and a 1.67 WHIP.  He also pitched in 20 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball for the Cubs this year and he was 1-0 with a 1.98 ERA and a 0.84 WHIP.  Takahashi has now pitched in 168 games (12 starts) in his first four years in the majors and he is 14-12 with 10 saves, a 3.99 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP.  I don’t think he will be in AAA-ball long for the Rockies if he looks good.
