The Colorado Rockies DFA David Hale

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by joelapinski on Friday 22 April 2016 at 6:19 pm

The Colorado Rockies have designated 28-year old righty reliever/starter David Hale for assignment.  Hale pitched in 2 games (0 starts) for the Rockies this year and he was 0-0 with a 13.50 ERA and a 3.00 WHIP.  Hale pitched in 19 games (12 starts) in his two years with the Rockies and he is 5-5 with a 6.27 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP.  Hale has now pitched in 66 games (20 starts) in his first four years in the majors and he is 10-10 with a 4.48 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP.  Well, it’s pretty clear that Hale can’t handle pitching in Colorado, but I bet some team will take a chance on turning him around.

UPDATE:  (4/25/2016) – The Rockies have lost David Hale on waivers to the Baltimore Orioles

The Colorado Rockies place Miguel Castro on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injuries,The Minors by joelapinski on Friday 22 April 2016 at 6:15 pm

The Colorado Rockies have placed 21-year old righty reliever Miguel Castro on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 18th due to right shoulder inflammation.  Castro has pitched in 6 games (0 starts) for the Rockies so far this year and he is 0-0 with a 1.50 ERA and a 0.67 WHIP.  He has only given up 2 hits and 2 walks while whiffing 8 batters in his first six innings this year.  This is really going to hurt the Rockies’ bullpen, as Castro is off to a rock solid start in 2016.  The Rockies have activated 24-year old righty starting pitcher Jon Gray to replace Castro on the roster and he will start tonight against the Dodgers at Coors Field.  Gray pitched in 2 games (both starts) on a rehab assignment in A-ball this year and he was 0-1 with a 2.08 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP.  Gray pitched in 9 games (all starts) for the Rockies last year in his first taste of the majors and he was 0-2 with a 5.53 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP.  The Rockies have high hopes for Gray.

The Colorado Rockies acquire Cody Decker from the Royals

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Trades by joelapinski on Wednesday 20 April 2016 at 5:22 pm

The Colorado Rockies have acquired 29-year old righty swinging 1B Cody Decker from the Royals for cash considerations.  Decker played in 7 games in AAA-ball for the Royals this year and he was 5 for 18 (.278 avg, 1.214 OPS) with 4 runs scored, 3 homers and 5 RBIs.  Decker has now played in 768 games in his first 8 years in the minors and he is 686 of 2,584 (.265 avg, .874 OPS) with 407 runs scored, 159 homers, 509 RBIs and 5 stolen bases.  Decker’s only Major League experience to this point in his career came last year when he played in 8 games for the Padres in which he was 0 for 11 (.000 avg, .000 OPS) with 1 RBI and 5 whiffs.  He will start out in AAA-ball for the Rockies.

Nolan Arenado is rolling for the Colorado Rockies

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Playing Well by joelapinski on Monday 18 April 2016 at 10:16 am

Let Trevor Story get all the ink, because I’m sure that 25-year old righty swinging 3B Nolan Arenado of the Colorado Rockies would rather sneak up on teams.  If that is even possible!  After all, he played in 157 games for the Rockies last year in which he was 177 of 616 (.287 avg, .898 OPS) with 97 runs scored, 42 homers (led National League), 130 RBIs (led Major Leagues) and 2 stolen bases.  He was an All-Star and he won a Gold Glove and a Silver Slugger Award for the Rockies in 2015.  He also finished 8th in the voting for the N.L. MVP Award in 2015.  He is off to another blazing start as he cranked two solo homers yesterday at Wrigley Field to power the Rockies to a 2-0 win!  He has played in 12 games for the Rockies so far this year and he is 14 of 50 (.280 avg, 1.021 OPS) with 10 runs scored, 6 homers and a Major League leading 16 RBIs!  The Rockies hope that Arenado keeps up the good work as he is one of the very best all-around players in baseball right now.

The Colorado Rockies place Todd Hundley on the 7-day D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injuries by joelapinski on Sunday 17 April 2016 at 9:53 am

The Colorado Rockies have placed starting catcher Todd Hundley on the 7-day disabled list, retroactive to April 14th due to a concussion.  Hundley has played in 7 games for the Rockies so far this year and he is 5 for 22 (.227 avg, .802 OPS) with 2 runs scored, 1 homer and 3 RBIs.  Dustin Garneau will back up left swinging Tony Wolters at catcher until Hundley is ready to return to action.  He has played in 1 game for the Rockies so far this year and he is 1 for 3.

The Colorado Rockies place Charlie Blackmon on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injuries by joelapinski on Friday 15 April 2016 at 2:46 pm

The Colorado Rockies have placed 29-year old lefty swinging CF Charlie Blackmon on the 15-day disabled list due to turf toe.  Blackmon has played in 8 games for the Rockies so far this year and he is 5 for 27 (.185 avg, .575 OPS) with 6 runs scored, 0 homers, 3 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  Gerardo Parra will move from LF to CF until Blackmon is ready to return to action.  34-year old righty swinging Ryan Raburn and 29-year old righty swinging Brandon Barnes will probably split P.T. in LF until Blackmon is ready to return to action.  Raburn has played in 6 games for the Rockies so far this year and he is 3 for 9 (.333 avg, 1.300 OPS) with 2 runs scored, 2 homers and 3 RBIs.  Barnes has played in 6 games for the Rockies so far this year and he is 3 for 10 (.300 avg, .764 OPS).  The Rockies are blest to have solid backup outfielders, so they should be OK until Blackmon returns to action.

The Colorado Rockies have six pitchers with an ERA over 10.00

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Pitching BP by joelapinski on Thursday 14 April 2016 at 7:13 am

The Colorado Rockies are 4-4 so far this year due to a great start by their batters!  That is because the Rockies have a 7.61 ERA and a 1.75 WHIP as a team!  They have six pitchers with ERAs over 10.00 right now!  Lefty Jorge De La Rosa is 0-1 with a 12.46 ERA and a 2.54 WHIP and righty Jordan Lyles is 0-1 with a 11.25 ERA and a 2.25 WHIP.  Both De La Rosa and Jordan Lyles have started two games for the Rockies so far this year!  The bullpen also has four guys with ERAs over 10.00.  Lefty rookie Jason Gurka has pitched in 4 games in which he is 0-0 with a 10.57 ERA and a 1.96 WHIP.  Righties Chad Qualls (3 games, 0-0, 13.50 ERA, 3.00 WHIP), Christian Bergman (2 games, 0-1, 12.00 ERA, 2.33 WHIP) and Justin Miller (2 games, 1-0, 10.13 ERA and a 2.63 WHIP) have also been awful.  These guys need to start pitching better soon.

The Colorado Rockies’ pitching staff is a mess so far in 2016

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Pitching BP by joelapinski on Monday 11 April 2016 at 5:19 pm

The Colorado Rockies are somehow 3-3 on the season despite having a 7.98 ERA and a 1.89 WHIP.  Righty starters Tyler Chatwood, Chad Bettis, righty reliever Miguel Castro and lefty closer Jake McGee are the only pitchers who have pitched decent ball for the Rockies so far this year.  Chatwood has started 1 game for the Rockies so far this year and he is 1-0 with a 1.42 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP.  Bettis has started 2 games for the Rockies so far this year and he is 1-0 with a 4.38 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP.  Castro has pitched in 4 games out of the pen so far this year for the Rockies and he is 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a 0.75 WHIP while McGee has pitched in 2 games for the Rockies so far in which he is 0-0 with 2 saves, a 4.50 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP.  This quartet is a combined 2-0 with 2 saves, a 2.92 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP.  The rest of the Rockies’ pitching staff is 1-3 with a 12.39 ERA and a 2.54 WHIP!  The Rockies will not continue to win games pitching like they are right now.

The bench is off to a good start for the Colorado Rockies

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Playing Well by joelapinski on Friday 8 April 2016 at 7:44 am

The Colorado Rockies‘ bench is looking impressive so far this year.  Righty swinging OF Ryan Raburn has played in all 3 games for the Rockies so far this year and he is 2 for 5 (.400 avg, 1.400 OPS) with 1 run scored, 1 homer and 1 RBI.  Righty swinging outfielder Brandon Barnes has played in 2 games for the Rockies so far this year and he is 2 for 3 (.667 avg, 1.417 OPS), but he has already been caught stealing twice.  Lefty swinging 1B Ben Paulsen has played in 2 games for the Rockies so far this year and he is 2 for 4 (.500 avg, 1.500 OPS) with 1 run scored and 2 doubles.  These guys might not start a lot of games in 2016, but they will play in a lot of games due to the pinch hitting needs of the Rockies.  I don’t see many complete games out of their starting rotation in 2016.

The double play combo for the Colorado Rockies have been raking this year

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Playing Well by joelapinski on Thursday 7 April 2016 at 8:06 am

27-year old righty swinging 2B D.J. LeMahieu and 23-year old righty swinging SS Trevor Story are raking at the plate for the Colorado Rockies so far this year.  LeMahieu played in 3 games against the D-Backs and he was 6 for 10 (.600 avg, 1.800 OPS) with 4 runs scored, 2 homers and 4 RBIs.  Story came into this season as the Rockies’ #8 prospect according to Baseball America.  He is showing why so far this year.  Story played in 3 games against the D-Backs and he was 4 for 14 (.286 avg, 1.429 OPS) with 4 runs scored, 4 homers and 7 RBIs.  Story has hit at least one homer in all three of the Rockies’ games so far, which is amazing.  The Rockies scored 20 runs and whacked 10 homers in the opening series against the D-Backs and that allowed them to win 2 of their first three games.
