The Colorado Rockies place Yorvit Torrealba on the D.L.

The Rockies have placed 35-year old righty swinging catcher Yorvit Torrealba on the 7-day disabled list due to a concussion.  Torrealba has played in 51 games for the Rockies so far this year and he is 36 of 143 (.252 avg, .608 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 0 homers and 10 RBIs.  The Rockies have called up 27-year old Jordan Pacheco to replace Torrealba as Wilin Rosario’s backup.  Pacheco played in 69 games earlier this year for the Rockies and he was 43 of 188 (.229 avg, .566 OPS) with 19 runs scored, 1 homer and 17 RBIs.

Corey Dickerson is rolling at the plate for the Colorado Rockies

24-year old lefty swinging outfielder Corey Dickerson came into this season as the Rockies’ #13 prospect according to Baseball America.  He played in 75 games in AAA-ball for the Rockies this year and he was 117 of 315 (.371 avg, 1.046 OPS) with 61 runs scored, 11 homers, 50 RBIs and 6 stolen bases.  The Rockies then called up Dickerson to replace Dexter Fowler (injured) on the active roster and he has played really well in his first taste of the majors, so far.  Dickerson has played in 33 games for the Rockies so far this year and he is 25 of 78 (.321 avg, .919 OPS) with 14 runs scored, 2 homers, 8 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  The Rockies hope that Dickerson keeps up the good work moving forward.

The Rockies have placed 23-year old righty starting pitcher Tyler Chatwood on the 15-day disabled list due to right elbow inflammation.  Chatwood has pitched in 15 games (all starts) for the Rockies so far this year and he is 7-4 with a 3.15 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP.  The Rockies have called up 28-year old righty starting pitcher Jeff Manship and he will replace Chatwood in the rotation.  He has pitched in 24 games (17 starts) in AAA-ball for the Rockies this year and he is 6-8 with a 4.85 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP.  Manship last pitched in the majors in 2012 for the Twins.  Manship has pitched in 41 games (6 starts) in his first four years in the majors and he is 3-2 with a 6.20 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP.  The Rockies hope that Chatwood only has to miss a couple of weeks as he has pitched well in 2013 for them.

The Rockies need more out of 22-year old righty swinging 3B Nolan Arenado moving forward.  Since July 1st, Arenado has played in 31 games for the Rockies in which he is 24 of 105 (.229 avg) with 6 runs scored, 2 homers, 12 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  He has now played in 90 games overall this year for the Rockies and he is 84 of 332 (.253 avg, .688 OPS) with 29 runs scored, 9 homers, 36 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  Arenado came into this season as the Rockies’ #1 prospect according to Baseball America, so they expect more from him with the bat moving forward.

The Rockies have placed 27-year old lefty swinging LF Carlos Gonzalez on the 15-day disabled list due to a sprained right middle finger.  Gonzalez has played in 103 games for the Rockies so far this year and he is 118 of 391 (.302 avg, .958 OPS) with 72 runs scored, 26 homers, 70 RBIs and 21 stolen bases.  Gonzalez leads the National League in both slugging percentage (.591) and OPS (.958) right now.  He is not replaceable, so the Rockies hope that he only needs to miss a couple of weeks.

The Rockies have designated 29-year old righty reliever/starter Josh Sullivan for assignment.  Sullivan pitched in 4 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball this year for the Rockies and he was 0-0 with a 13.50 ERA and a 2.70 WHIP.  Sullivan pitched in 133 games (58 starts) in his first eight years in the minors and he is 16-24 with 17 saves, a 4.33 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP.  This isn’t much of a loss for the Rockies if they lose him.

Jhoulys Chacin has been pitching really well for the Colorado Rockies in 2013

It’s all starting to come together for 25-year old righty starting pitcher Jhoulys Chacin.  He has pitched in 20 games (all starts) for the Rockies so far this year and he is 9-5 with a 3.54 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP.  He gave up 122 hits and 37 walks while whiffing 76 batters in his first 127 innings in the majors, which are impressive numbers.  Chacin has pitched really well on the road so far this year, working in 7 games (all starts) in which he is 3-2 with a 1.90 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP.  The Rockies need Chacin to keep up the good work if they are going to sneak themselves back into the race for a playoff spot in 2013.

The Rockies have placed 24-year old lefty starting pitcher Drew Pomeranz on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 23rd, due to left biceps tendinitis.  Pomeranz has pitched in 4 games (all starts) for the Rockies so far this year and he is 0-4 with a 8.10 ERA and a 2.52 WHIP.  He has given up 24 hits (4 homers) and 18 walks while whiffing 13 batters in his first 16 2/3 innings this year, as he has been a big mess.  The Rockies will call up 26-year old righty starting pitcher Collin McHugh to replace Pomeranz in the starting rotation.  McHugh has pitched in 5 games (all starts) in AA+AAA-ball for the Rockies this year and he is 2-1 with a 2.40 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP.  He also pitched in 3 games (1 start) earlier this year for the Mets in which he was 0-1 with a 10.29 ERA and a 2.14 WHIP.

24-year old righty swinging 2B/SS Josh Rutledge looks lost at the plate for the Rockies.  Since June 1st, Rutledge has played in 24 games in which he is 10 for 70 (.143 avg) with 9 runs scored, 1 homer, 3 RBIs and 3 stolen bases.  He has now played in 67 games overall this year and he is 48 of 227 (.211 avg, .584 OPS) with 35 runs scored, 6 homers, 16 RBIs and 8 stolen bases.  Rutledge looked rock solid as a rookie in 2012, but he has taken a big step backwards so far in 2013.

Ben Paulsen is looking sharp in the minors in 2013 for the Colorado Rockies

25-year old lefty swinging 1B Ben Paulsen has been playing really well in 2013 for the Rockies.  He has played in 86 games in AAA-ball for the Rockies so far this year and he is 98 of 325 (.302 avg, .906 OPS) with 49 runs scored, 26 doubles, 10 triples, 11 homers, 60 RBIs and 2 stolen bases.  Paulsen has now played in 516 games in his first five years in the minors and he is 545 of 1,981 (.275 avg, .771 OPS) with 269 runs scored, 56 homers, 299 RBIs and 12 stolen bases.  Paulsen could get his first shot at the majors when rosters expand on September 1st, if he keeps playing well in AAA-ball until then.
