The Colorado Rockies place 1B Jason Giambi on the D.L.

The Rockies have placed 41-year old lefty swinging 1B Jason Giambi on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 21st due to a viral syndrome. Giambi has played in 47 games for the Rockies so far this year and he is 19 of 79 (.241 avg, .709 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 1 homer and 8 RBIs. He has now played in 217 games in his first four years with the Rockies and he is 103 of 410 (.251 avg, .837 OPS) with 48 runs scored, 22 homers, 86 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. This hurts any chances of the Rockies dealing Giambi before the trade deadline.

The Rockies have placed 27-year old switch-hitter Jonathan Herrera and 26-year old righty swinging Chris Nelson on the 15-day D.L. retroactive to July 16th. Herrera has an infection in his right wrist and Nelson has an irregular heartbeat. Herrera has played in 45 games for the Rockies so far this year and he is 30 for 122 (.246 avg, .678 OPS) with 20 runs scored, 3 homers, 6 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. Nelson has played in 58 games for the Rockies so far this year and he is 43 of 168 (.256 avg, .735 OPS) with 18 runs scored, 5 homers, 23 RBIs and 1 stolen base. The Rockies have called up 24-year old righty swinging infielder D.J. LaMahieu and 27-year old righty swinging 1B/OF Andrew Brown to replace Nelson and Herrera on the active roster. LeMahieu played in 19 games earlier this year for the Rockies and he was 8 for 39 (.205 avg, .493 OPS) with 3 runs scored, 0 homers, 2 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Andrew Brown has played in 86 games in AAA-ball for the Rockies this year and he was 106 of 334 (.317 avg, .977 OPS) with 70 runs scored, 20 homers, 84 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. Brown got his first action in the majors last year with the Cardinals. Brown played in 11 games for the Cardinals last year and he was 4 for 22 (.182 avg, .409 OPS) with 1 run scored, 0 homers and 3 RBIs.

The Colorado Rockies lose Juan Nicasio for the rest of the season

25-year old righty starting pitcher Juan Nicasio will miss the rest of the 2012 season due to surgery on his left knee. Nicasio pitched in 11 games (all starts) for the Rockies in 2012 and he was 2-3 with a 5.28 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP. He has now pitched in 24 games (all starts) in his first two years with the Rockies and he is 6-7 with a 4.65 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP. This is just another blow to the Rockies’ starting rotation, which has been pretty awful so far this year.

The Rockies have placed 34-year old righty swinging catcher Wil Nieves on the 15-day disabled list due to turf toe on his right foot. Nieves has played in 16 games for the Rockies so far this year and he is 14 of 47 (.298 avg, .738 OPS) with 3 runs scored, 1 homer and 5 RBIs. The Rockies have activated 36-year old righty swinging Ramon Hernandez from the D.L. to take Nieves’ spot on the roster. Hernandez has played in 28 games for the Rockies so far this year and he is 21 of 98 (.214 avg, .645 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 4 homers and 16 RBIs.

The Rockies have placed 38-year old lefty swinging 1B Todd Helton on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 9th, due to right hip inflammation. Helton has played in 63 games for the Rockies so far this year and he is 52 of 221 (.235 avg, .730 OPS) with 29 runs scored, 7 homers, 34 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Helton’s injury will open the door for the Rockies to play Tyler Colvin every day while he’s out of action. He better get well soon or he might not have a starting job when he gets back.

The Rockies have placed 25-year old righty starting pitcher Juan Nicasio on the 15-day disabled list due to a left knee strain. Nicasio has pitched in 11 games (all starts) for the Rockies so far this year and he is 2-3 with a 5.28 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP. He will be replaced in the starting rotation by 28-year old righty Guillermo Moscoso, who has been summoned from AAA. Moscoso has pitched in 9 games (all starts) in AAA-ball for the Rockies this year and he is 4-3 with a 5.54 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP. Moscoso pitched in 2 games (both starts) earlier this year for the Rockies and he was 0-1 with a 11.57 ERA and a 2.14 WHIP. The Rockies hope that Moscoso is better this time around.

The Colorado Rockies place SS Troy Tulowitzki on the D.L.

The Rockies have placed 27-year old righty swinging SS Troy Tulowitzki on the 15-day disabled list due to a strained left groin. Tulowitzki has played in 47 games for the Rockies so far this year and he is 52 for 181 (.287 avg, .846 OPS) with 33 runs scored, 8 homers, 27 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. He has now played in 744 games in his first seven years with the Rockies and he is 822 for 2,813 (.292 avg, .868 OPS) with 471 runs scored, 130 homers, 470 RBIs and 53 stolen bases. Marco Scutaro will likely move from 2B to SS until Tulowitzki returns to action. The Rockies are praying that Tulo will only miss a couple of weeks.

UPDATE: (6/21/2012) – Troy Tulowitzki is going to miss the next 8 weeks as he recovers from arthroscopic surgery to his groin. This is a big blow to the Rockies.

The Colorado Rockies are getting good power production out of their catchers

36-year old righty swinging Ramon Hernandez and 23-year old righty swinging Wilin Rosario are really giving the Rockies a lot of thump with their bats so far this year. Hernandez has played in 27 games for the Rockies so far this year and he is 20 for 93 (.215 avg, .658 OPS) with 8 runs scored, 4 homers and 15 RBIs. Wilin Rosario has played in 25 games for the Rockies so far this year and he is 15 for 72 (.208 avg, .771 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 6 homers and 15 RBIs. The Rockies will put up with a lack of batting average (.212 combined) as long as their catchers keep hitting bombs as they have combined for 10 homers and 30 RBIs so far this year.

UPDATE: (5/25/2012) – The Rockies have placed Ramon Hernandez on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 24th due to a left hand strain. Wilin Rosario will take over the full time catcher job until Hernandez is ready to return to action. The Rockies have called up 34-year old righty swinging catcher Wil Nieves to back up Rosario. Nieves has played in 28 games in AAA-ball so far this year for the Rockies and he is 26 for 87 (.299 avg, .778 OPS) with 14 runs scored, 3 homers, 14 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Nieves last played in the majors last season with the Brewers. He has played in 282 games in his first 8 years in the majors and he is 166 for 751 (.221 avg, .557 OPS) with 55 runs scored, 5 homers, 73 RBIs and 2 stolen bases.

The Rockies have placed 27-year old switch-hitting infielder Jonathan Herrera on the 15-day disabled list due to a right hamstring strain. Herrera has played in 26 games for the Rockies so far this year and he is 16 for 67 (.239 avg, .655 OPS) with 12 runs scored, 2 homers and 4 RBIs. The Rockies have called up 23-year old righty swinging infielder D.J. LeMahieu to replace Herrera on the active roster. LeMahieu has played in 43 games in AAA-ball so far this year and he is 57 for 181 (.315 avg, .752 OPS) with 19 runs scored, 1 homer, 26 RBIs and 11 stolen bases. His first experience in the show was last season with the Cubs. He played in 37 games for the Cubs last year and he was 15 for 60 (.250 avg, .546 OPS) with 3 runs scored, 0 homers and 4 RBIs.

The Rockies have placed 26-year old righty swinging infielder Chris Nelson on the 15-day disabled list due to a left wrist injury. Nelson has played in 24 games for the Rockies so far this year and he is 16 for 73 (.210 avg, .601 OPS) with 4 runs scored, 0 homers, 7 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Nelson has now played in 104 games in his first three years in the majors and he is 68 for 278 (.245 avg, .644 OPS) with 31 runs scored, 4 homers, 23 RBIs and 5 stolen bases. Nelson might benefit from a little break as he has not hit the ball well at all this year.
