The Colorado Rockies deal Carl Thomore to the White Sox

The Rockies have dealt 20-year old righty swinging outfielder Carl Thomore to the White Sox for cash considerations.  Thomore didn’t play in any games in the minors this year for the Rockies.  He played in 58 games in his two years in the minors for the Rockies and he was 40 for 204 (.196 avg, .617 OPS) with 36 runs scored, 4 homers, 31 RBIs and 4 stolen bases.  This is not much of a loss for the Rockies, as they didn’t like what they saw out of him in his first two years in the minors.

The Colorado Rockies call up Josh Rutledge

The Colorado Rockies have called up 24-year old righty swinging SS/2B Josh Rutledge to replace Troy Tulowitzki on the active roster.  Rutledge played in 43 games earlier this year for the Rockies and he was 38 of 157 (.242 avg, .655 OPS) with 26 runs scored, 5 homers, 13 RBIs and 5 stolen bases.  He didn’t hang his head when he got sent to AAA.  He played in 17 games in AAA-ball after his demotion and he was 24 of 69 (.348 avg, 1.003 OPS) with 13 runs scored, 2 homers, 10 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  Rutledge will likely play a lot of SS until Tulowitzki is ready to return to action.

Kiel Roling is showing off some power in AA-ball for the Colorado Rockies

26-year old righty swinging 1B Kiel Roling is off to a solid start in AA-ball this year for the Rockies.  He has played in 49 games in AA-ball so far this year and he is 48 of 176 (.273 avg, .923 OPS) with 31 runs scored, 14 homers and 46 RBIs.  Roling has now played in 443 games in his first six years in the minors and he is 432 of 1,593 (.271 avg, .827 OPS) with 251 runs scored, 79 homers, 275 RBIs and 4 stolen bases.  Roling could move up to AAA-ball in the near future if he keeps hitting well.

David Dahl is off to a good start to his minor league career for the Colorado Rockies

19-year old lefty swinging outfielder David Dahl came into this season as the Rockies’ #2 prospect according to Baseball America.  Dahl has played in 10 games in A-ball so far this year and he is 11 for 40 (.275 avg, .735 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 0 homers, 7 RBIs and 2 stolen bases.  Dahl has now played in 77 games in his first two years in the minors and he is 117 of 320 (.366 avg, 1.009 OPS) with 71 runs scored, 9 homers, 64 RBIs and 14 stolen bases.  The Rockies are likely going to take things slowly with Dahl moving forward, but he does have a huge upside.

Charlie Blackmon is ripping the ball in AAA for the Colorado Rockies in 2013

26-year old lefty swinging outfielder Charlie Blackmon is ripping the ball in AAA for the Rockies so far this year.  Blackmon has played in 22 games in AAA-ball so far this year and he is 29 for 78 (.372 avg, 1.113 OPS) with 27 runs scored, 3 homers, 18 RBIs and 5 stolen bases.  Blackmon has played in 69 games in his first two years with the Rockies and he is 57 for 211 (.270 avg, .659 OPS) with 24 runs scored, 3 homers, 17 RBIs and 6 stolen bases.  Blackmon will be the first outfielder called up with the need arises with the Rockies.

The Colorado Rockies summon Nolan Arenado from AAA

The Colorado Rockies have called up 22-year old righty swinging 3B Nolan Arenado.  He came into this season as the Rockies’ #1 prospect according to Baseball America.  Arenado played in 18 games in AAA-ball this year for the Rockies and he was 24 for 66 (.364 avg, 1.059 OPS) with 14 runs scored, 3 homers and 21 RBIs.  He has played in 432 games in his five years in the minors for the Rockies and he was 501 of 1,675 (.299 avg, .818 OPS) with 224 runs scored, 49 homers, 286 RBIs and 8 stolen bases.  Arenado will likely take over as the Rockies’ starting 3B starting today.

The Colorado Rockies call up Tyler Chatwood

The Rockies have called up 23-year old righty starting pitcher Tyler Chatwood to replace the injured Jhoulys Chacin in the rotation.  Chatwood pitched in 3 games (all starts) in AAA-ball for the Rockies this year and he was 1-0 with a 1.84 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP.  Chatwood pitched in 19 games (12 starts) for the Rockies last year, his first year with the team, and he was 5-6 with 1 save, a 5.43 ERA and a 1.66 WHIP.  The Rockies need Chatwood to pitch better this time around.

21-year old righty swinging 3B Nolan Arenado came into this season as the Rockies’ #1 prospect according to Baseball America and he’s showing why so far this year.  He has played in 8 games in AAA-ball for the Rockies so far this year and he is 13 for 29 (.448 avg, 1.397 OPS) with 8 runs scored, 2 homers and 10 RBIs.  Arenado has now played in 422 games in his first five years in the minors and he is 490 for 1,638 (.299 avg, .819 OPS) with 218 runs scored, 48 homers, 275 RBIs and 8 stolen bases.  Arenado is going to be in Denver playing for the Rockies at some point in 2013, it’s only a matter of time.

The Rockies have five rookies that could help them at some point in 2013.  Here’s a look at them:

Nolan Arenado:  21-year old righty swinging 3B Nolan Arenado comes into this season as the Rockies’ #1 prospect according to Baseball America.  He played in 134 games in AA-ball last year and he was 147 of 516 (.285 avg, .766 OPS) with 55 runs scored, 12 homers and 56 RBIs.  He has now played in 414 games in his first four years in the minors and he is 477 of 1,609 (.296 avg, .808 OPS) with 210 runs scored, 46 homers, 265 RBIs and 8 stolen bases.

Ryan Wheeler:  24-year old lefty swinging 3B/1B/OF Ryan Wheeler comes into this season as the Rockies’ #10 prospect according to Baseball America.  Wheeler played in 50 games for the D-Backs in his first taste of the majors last year and he was 26 for 109 (.239 avg, .634 OPS) with 11 runs scored, 1 homer, 10 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  He has also played in 93 games in AAA-ball last year and he was 127 of 362 (.351 avg, .960 OPS) with 56 runs scored, 15 homers, 90 RBIs and 3 stolen bases.  Wheeler has now played in 428 games in his first four years in the minors and he is 512 of 1,637 (.313 avg, .858 OPS) with 243 runs scored, 49 homers, 287 RBIs and 16 stolen bases.

Tim Wheeler:  25-year old lefty swinging outfielder Tim Wheeler comes into this season as the Rockies’ #11 prospect according to Baseball America.  He played in 92 games in AAA-ball for the Rockies last year and he was 115 of 379 (.303 avg, .768 OPS) with 67 runs scored, 2 homers, 37 RBIs and 7 stolen bases.  Wheeler has now played in 427 games in his first four years in the minors and he is 473 of 1,723 (.275 avg, .790 OPS) with 304 runs scored, 52 homers, 221 RBIs and 60 stolen bases.

Rob Scahill:  26-year old righty starting pitcher Rob Scahill comes into this season as the Rockies’ #12 prospect according to Baseball America.  He pitched in 6 games (0 starts) for the Rockies in his first taste of the majors in 2012 and he was 0-0 with a 1.04 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP.  He also pitched in 29 games (all starts) in AAA-ball for the Rockies last year and he was 9-11 with a 5.68 ERA and a 1.59 WHIP.  Scahill has now pitched in 98 games (97 starts) in his 32-33 with a 4.57 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP.

Rafael Ortega:  21-year old lefty swinging outfielder Rafael Ortega comes into this season as the Rockies’ #15 prospect according to Baseball America.  He played in 2 games for the Rockies last year and he was 2 for 4 (.500 avg, 1.167 OPS) with 1 stolen base.  He also played in 114 games in A-ball for the Rockies last year and he was 140 of 495 (.283 avg, .754 OPS) with 81 runs scored, 8 homers, 60 RBIs and 36 stolen bases.  Ortega has now played in 420 games in his first five years in the minors and he is 519 of 1,706 (.304 avg, .790 OPS) with 310 runs scored, 25 homers, 221 RBIs and 147 stolen bases.

Joey Williamson is off to a good start in the minors for the Colorado Rockies in 2012

26-year old righty reliever Joey Williamson has been pitching well in the minors for the Rockies so far this year. Williamson has pitched in 40 games (1 start) in AA+AAA-ball for the Rockies so far this year and he is 3-2 with 1 save, a 2.34 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP. He has given up 47 hits and he has whiffed 59 batters in only 50 innings pitched which is impressive, but, he has also walked 27 batters so far this year and that’s just too many. Williamson has now pitched in 159 games (27 starts) in his first five years in the minors and he is 30-10 with 7 saves, a 3.47 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP. Maybe Williamson will get his first shot at the show when rosters expand on September 1st.
