The Colorado Rockies are going to be minor sellers this week

I know about the Ubaldo Jimenez rumors going around but I don’t see the Rockies pulling the trigger and moving him, as I don’t think any team is going to give them what they want for him. There is no need for the Rockies to blow up the roster but they could make some deals to bring in some prospects. Ty Wigginton is the best hitting 3B likely on the trade block, so he could fetch the Rockies a nice prospect or two. The Rockies could also get something nice for outfielder Ryan Spilborghs if they decided to move him. Jason Giambi, Mark Ellis and Jonathan Herrera are also likely on the trade block. Righty relievers Rafael Betancourt, Matt Belisle and Matt Lindstrom are all likely to be offered up in trades and a lot of teams are going to want those guys. The Rockies would love to move righty starting pitcher Aaron Cook but I just don’t see that happening. I look at the Rockies to take advantage of a couple teams for their relievers and Ty Wigginton this week.

If I were running the Colorado Rockies here’s a couple moves I would make

The Rockies need to make a couple moves to deal with the rest of the N.L. West. The Rockies just aren’t getting anything at all out of Todd Helton this season. With that in mind I would call up the Blue Jays and see if they were willing to pay Lyle Overbay while he would be playing for the Rockies. If the answer is yes I would send them 26-year old lefty starting pitcher Greg Smith. I would then call up the Royals and offer them 25-year old switch hitting IF/OF Eric Young straight up for infielder Mike Aviles. Aviles would start at 2B until Troy Tulowitzki came off the D.L. Adding Overbay and Aviles would really enhance the chances of the Rockies in 2010.

The Colorado Rockies could be looking for a middle infielder this month

The Colorado Rockies might be looking for some middle infield help this month. With 2B Jonathan Herrera and Clint Barmes playing so well they might just be looking for a backup who can play both positions. John McDonald, Julio Lugo, Willie Bloomquist, Adam Kennedy, Craig Counsell, Jeff Keppinger and Ronny Cedeno each make sense. The Rockies are sitting at 44-38 which has them five games behind the Padres in the N.L. West. If Herrera starts to slump then guys like Mike Aviles, Mark Ellis, Christian Guzman and Mike Fontenot could come into play. The Rockies don’t need any major changes to compete for a playoff spot this year.

The Colorado Rockies will likely be shopping Chris Iannetta soon

Three teams will likely be after catcher Chris Iannetta if the Rockies put him on the block soon. The Red Sox, Rangers and Astros will all likely be interested in him. The Red Sox would probably offer prospects while the Rangers and Astros could give up players that could help the Rockies this year. With that in mind I think I would be looking at the Texas teams. I don’t think the Astros match up well with the Rockies right now but the Rangers would likely be willing to deal Joaquin Arias, Taylor Teagarden and Dustin Nippert for Iannetta and I think that is a deal I would make. Arias can play all over the infield and he is a .300+ hitter in the majors. Teagarden could be stashed in AAA to see if he can get his career back on track and Nippert could work in long relief immediately for the Rockies.

The Colorado Rockies might try to move Manny Corpas over the winter

The Rockies will likely try to move Manny Corpas over the winter. The Tigers are looking for bullpen help so the Rockies should offer him to them for catcher Dusty Ryan and outfielder Clete Thomas. With Brad Hawpe likely moving to another team via trade this winter the Rockies could use someone like Thomas who can play all three outfield positions. Ryan would give the Rockies depth at catcher as he is likely good enough to back up Chris Iannetta.
